Alikay Naturals vs. the FDA: What's REALLY Going on with Bentonite Me Baby?!

Have you heard?

The FDA (Food & Drug Administration) issued a warning about Alikay Naturals Bentonite Me Baby bentonite clay containing elevated levels of lead.

SKRRRRRRRRRTTTTTT!

WHAT?!

Yes. You may or may not remember in late January, Alikay Naturals began an online campaign to educate customers about their Bentonite Me Baby in light of these serious allegations by the FDA. Here are some pics from Insta, along with their official press release:

Alikay Naturals vs. the FDA: What's REALLY Going on with Bentonite Me Baby?!
Source: Alikay Naturals Instagram
Here's a snippety snip of the FDA's findings:
"FDA laboratory analysis of the product found elevated lead levels. Exposure to lead can cause serious damage to the central nervous system, the kidneys, and the immune system... FDA learned that this product may contain lead from the Minnesota Department of Health. FDA has not confirmed any cases of lead poisoning associated with the product."(source)
In all fairness, the FDA issued a similar warning about the brand "Best" Bentonite clay here.

So, what really happened? And how in the hell did an innocuous jar of clay (most widely used for poppin' curls and amazing skin) wind up at the center of drama with the Food & Drug Administration?

How, Sway?

True to Christina Patrice form, I went digging. And based on this article in the Minnesota Post, a whistleblower with laboratory connects is to blame.

According to the article, in December of 2015, Megan Curran de Neieto found herself inside of a Target Store in St. Paul, and spotted a jar of Bentonite Me Baby on the shelf.

Nothing out of the ordinary here - Alikay Naturals products are sold in Target stores nationwide.

Curran de Nieto claims that the jar "just caught her eye".

[insert extreme side-eye here.]

It just so happens that Curren de Nieto is the director of community health programs at CLEARCorps, a St. Paul-based nonprofit organization that helps families reduce their exposure to lead. And when she saw the Bentonite Me Baby product at Target, it reminded her of a family she worked with that told her they had been ingesting bentonite clay for health reasons.

To be clear, the brand of bentonite wasn't Alikay Naturals, but that's not important - right? Also, no mention of said family suffering from lead poisoning, or any medical complications due to bentonite clay consumption. Not important either, right?

[keep the side-eye strong.]

Curran de Nieto went on to purchase the jar, and send a sample of Bentonite Me Baby to a laboratory she works with through her nonprofit. Weeks later, the results were in - the sample of Bentonite Me Baby contained 29 parts per million (PPM) of lead.

Because I like context, let's chew on these here facts:

  • bentonite clay comes from the earth - it is sourced from naturally occurring volcanic ash sediments
  • most bentonite clay is mined in the western region of the US - between South Dakota and Wyoming
  • lead is a naturally occurring element in the earth's crust, and can be found in our air, soil, homes, and water
  • according to the Environmental Protection Agency, uncontaminated soil contains 50 - 400 PPM of lead

You see where I'm going with this? Lets put 2 and 2 together to make 4.

So you mean to tell me, a lead safety warrior, slipped, fell, and landed in some bentonite clay - and decided to get it tested because it just "caught her eye"? Oh-kay. Did any of the vitamins and supplements at Target catch your eye? How about those lippies and eyeliners? Cause those have lead, too.
Alikay Naturals vs. the FDA: What's REALLY Going on with Bentonite Me Baby?!
Closeup of Alikay Naturals Bentonite Me Baby
I just find it so hard to believe that of all the products in Target, this tiny 8oz jar of earthen clay just so happened to tickle her fancy. On a whim.

What is this one woman army crusade against "Big Bentonite"?

Knock it off.

Megan, if you just so happen to be reading this, I have a few questions:

  1. Had it been Aztec Indian Healing Clay, would it have piqued your curiosity equally so?
  2. Why didn't you seek to test out the specific brand of bentonite clay that the family was using, for a more direct correlation to lead exposure and ingestion in your clients?
  3. To what degree did a picture of a Black woman on the label of a product play a role in your persistence in having a product tested?
  4. Why didn't you go to a health food store to focus on having other clays and supplements tested, instead of Target? Prop 65 warnings are all over the place in stores like Vitamin Shoppe. No shade, just saying.
  5. Do you really think we believe this was all by happenstance?
  6. What other products from the hair and beauty section did you send off for testing that day?

Ok Megan, I'm done with you for now. Back to the readers.

Now, I can't exactly absolve Alikay Naturals of all culpability here. Although I personally would never ingest bentonite clay, I know there are some earthsy folks out there who will try it at least once. To that end, the Bentonite Me Baby label does say, "Internal: Works to aid in colon and detox cleansing to remove harmful toxins from the body, which helps many things including raising energy levels."

Two things would have helped here:

  1. An asterisk with the disclaimer that, "this statement has not been evaluated by the FDA."
  2. Or - removing the provision for internal use, thus rendering the product "for external use only."
To their credit, the label does also say, "for use internally do research or consult a professional before beginning use."

For Alikay Naturals and founder Rochelle Graham, the response on social media platforms like Instagram has been mostly positive. Many supporters of the #AlikayNation cite this as a test, and a huge waste of time and resources on the part of the FDA. Graham, under her personal Instagram handle @blackonyx77 shared that,
"the FDA tested the product in the food and drug caterogy...but our product is a hair and skin cosmetic for topical use...their reports compared us to the levels of lead in food and candy which isn't a fair comparison..."
If nothing else, this is a tough lesson learned for Alikay Naturals. In 2016, CYA (cover your arse) mode is in full effect. Folks are ruthless, and will step on and over whoever they need to in order to get their golden ticket. In recent months, the Bentonite Me Baby label has undergone an intense revision, so as to make it 100% clear to consumers that the product is intended for topical use only.

I'm sure somebody, somewhere thinks Megan Curran de Nieto is a hero. I won't say what I think of her, because I've still got a pretty good shot at making it to heaven.

And for what it's worth, I don't trust the FDA either. Cause cigarettes. Monsanto. Big Pharma. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

I just feel some type of way about folks coming for Black owned, natural hair small businesses.

Now for me to go mud rinse my curls and make an epic mask for my face.

With Bentonite Me Baby.

#EveryDayFitness Recipe: High Protein Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Balls!

If you follow me on Instagram or Snapchat (SN: maneobjective), then you know I've been on a healthy cooking crusade. I love cooking (seriously, I cook every day if time permits), and I've taken a special interest in making meals healthier for myself and Mr. Samuel.

One thing I refuse to compromise on though, is taste.

Ain't no way you can convince me that riced cauliflower tastes like rice.

Or that stevia ain't satan's sweetener. (that aftertaste is for the birds)

See, here's the dirty little secret about Instagram, Pinterest, and all these food accounts and "healthy" dessert recipes you see floating online. They look amazing - dense and moist with layers of chocolatey flavor and nutty goodness. Oozing sprinkles and cream - yet packed with protein, low in sugar, and high in fiber.

Let me tell you something.

80% of them are nasty.

I mean, if you can convince yourself that protein powder is a 1:1 substitute for cake batter, then more power to you.

But I'm here to tell you that if you love sweets, but want to pivot in a healthier direction (cause, life), you're going to be sorely disappointed.

I've made mug cakes, regular cakes, waffles, cookie dough, and tried several variations of frozen desserts. My protein cake? Looked and smelled delicious, but looked, felt, and tasted like hot rubber. Waffles? No comment. Mug cake? Recipe tweaks still in progress, and coming soon. That cookie dough I made with garbanzo beans? A COMPLETE AND UTTER DISASTER. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, E-V-E-R MAKE COOKIE DOUGH WITH GARBANZO BEANS. You will be angry, upset, and have strange smelling blended beans in your trash can 30 minutes later. I promise.

Don't (in my Bryson Tiller voice).

I know part of it is re-training my tastebuds, but cold turkey ain't my style.

You know what is amazing and actually tastes good, though? These here High Protein Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Balls! I got the idea for this recipe from Sarah Lynn Fitness - I stumbled across her cookie dough bites on my Instagram explore feed. I checked out her blog post with the recipe, and make some tweaks as I saw fit (see above comments about stevia and protein powder). The nutrition breakdown is similar, but the taste is off the charts!

#EveryDayFitness Recipe: High Protein Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Balls!

My High Protein Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Balls Recipe:

Feel free to swap out any of the ingredients or tweak measurements.

In a medium bowl, mix all dry ingredients (Coconut Flour, PB2, Sea Salt, Turbinado) thoroughly. Add in wet ingredients (Vanilla Greek Yogurt, Muscle Frosting, Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk) and mix. If your mixture isn't doughy enough, add more Greek Yogurt or Almond Milk until you achieve the desired consistency - moist and thick, but not runny.

Lastly, fold in chocolate chips.

Spoon out dough and roll into individual balls and place into a freezer-safe container.

Freeze for 15-20 minutes or until firm.

Remove from the freezer and enjoy! Store in the fridge for safe keeping.

I Tried 7 Alikay Naturals Products for the First Time. Here's What Happened.

I love reviewing products. I really love when those products come from a Black-owned brand. But Alikay Nauturals has me over the moon. Why? Because the CEO and Founder of Alikay Naturals is Rochelle Graham, aka Blackonyx77 from YouTube. Rochelle built her beauty empire in the most dynamic way - from showing DIY recipes and tips on YouTube, to sitting at the helm of a multi-million dollar beauty brand that's shelved at retailers like Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and Sally Beauty nationwide.

Alikay Naturals represents (for me) what's possible beyond the world of blogging. Not that I'll ever stop blogging -- but growth is important to me. So to see Rochelle go from YouTube to store shelves is nothing short of inspirational.

Anywho, like the title of this blog post suggests, I tried 7 Alikay Naturals products for the first time. Thanks to Rochelle and the Alikay team, I was able to deep dive into: Avocado Cream Moisture Repairing Mask, Dulce Hydrating Curl Lotion, Bentonite Me Baby, Aloe Berry Styling Gel, Creme Brulee Curling Delight, Botanicals Hair and Scalp Balm, and Essential 17 Growth Oil.

What did I think of them? Watch my #ProductChatter video below, and read keep reading the post for all the nitty-gritty details on each one!

Active Ingredients
  • Cetearyl Alcohol: Considered "fatty alcohol" -- NOT to be confused with drying alcohols such as ethyl. Acts as a lubricant, thickener, and emollient. Also gives conditioner its velvety feel without making hair greasy. Is additionally used to keep product ingredients from separating.
  • Stearalkonium Chloride: Cationic surfactant derived from stearic acid, a fatty acid found in plants and animals. It is an antistatic agent, and positively charged salt that attracts and binds proteins, which are negatively charged. It is found to increase luster and improve the condition of wet or dry hair, often serving to detangle the hair.
  • Aloe Vera Juice: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness.
  • Avocado Oil: Omega 3-rich nourishing oil extract that can enhances shine, moisture retention, softness, and elasticity in hair.
  • Avocado Butter: Omega 3-rich nourishing butter extract that can enhances shine, moisture retention, softness, and elasticity in hair.

The Good
I love how creamy and thick the Avocado Cream Moisture Repairing Mask is. The smell is amazing - like a green apple Now & Later candy (#hoodmemories lol). The slip is okay - nothing I would particularly use to detangle with, but better than some products that feel like sandpaper on the hair (lol). It soaked right in to my strands - and left them shiny and moisturized. I am totally nuts over how much avocado goodnes is packed into this product. Avocado is one of the best oils for distressed curls - helping to boost shine, softness, and elasticity while patching up damaged cuticles. Yes, yes, and more yes. With each use, my hair got stronger and was full of shine.

The Bad
I do wish the Avocado Cream Moisture Repairing Mask had more slip -- but I've used products with less and continued to love them, so I can do the same here.

The Bottom Line
As a protein fiend, I wish there was some bonafide protein in there - that would really send it over the top. But even without, it's a solid deep conditioner and perfect for protein sensitive ladies who need a little strengthening boost.

Would I Buy it Again?
Oh absolutely - without a doubt!

Active Ingredients
  • Aloe Vera Juice: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness.
  • Cocoa Butter: A powerful emollient and softening agent. Not only does it possess amazing healing and soothing properties for the skin (scalp), it softens hair and promotes shine and elasticity.
  • Kokum Butter: Fatty acid rich butter that helps with cell oxygenation, making nutrients more readily available for use by the scalp - promoting hair growth and improving elasticity to prevent breakage.
  • Silk Amino Protein: Used for conditioning, moisturizing, known to make hair glossy, and give hair more body. It is a strong humectant, and is made from a mixture of amino acids, the most common in this mixture are Glutamic acid, Serine, Proline, Arginine, Threonine, and Aspartic acid.
  • Argan Oil: Oil rich in vitamin E and contains omega 3 and omega 9 fatty acids that provide nutrition for hair. It also contains Linoleic and oleic acid that helps to hydrate and moisturize hair. Helps repair damaged follicles, imparts shine, and prevents frizz and rough ends.

Protein Free?
No.

Curly Girl Friendly?

The Good
Y'all, Dulce got me out here acting a dang fool. I love the smell, the creaminess, how it melts into my strands, and provides super moisture and shine. It works phenomenally as a leave-in, or moisturizer. It's not oily or greasy, and keeps my curls looking supple between wash days. I don't know why more people aren't talking about Dulce Hydrating Curl Lotion, because it delivers moisturized realness.

The Bad
The only downside to Dulce Hydrating Curl Lotion is that I'm running out, and I have to order more online. Why is this not in stores?! In gallon sizes?!

The Bottom Line
Get you some Dulce Hydrating Curl Lotion for #summersixteen. You'll be walking around smelling like tropical Jolly Ranchers, and your hair will be poppin'.

Would I Buy it Again?
Would I? I got it sitting in my cart riiiiight now.

Bentonite Me Baby

I Tried 7 Alikay Naturals Products for the First Time. Here's What Happened.

Due to challenges with the FDA earlier this year, Bentonite Me Baby is not currently being sold in stores or online. Click here to read all about what's going on.

Cost

Active Ingredients
  • Aloe Vera: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness.
  • Coconut Oil: Oil high in saturated fats (which is why when cold, it is solid). One of the few known oils to penetrate the hair shaft and truly moisturize hair. Coconut oil helps to moisturize, seal, and prevent breakage.
  • Almond Oil: Smoothes hair cuticles, promotes hair growth and thickness, boosts shine.
  • Vitamin E: Supports hair growth, and believed to assist in preventing hair loss. Also has been known to be a proven UV protectant.
  • Fragrance

The Good
Although I can't quite put my finger on the magic ingredient that makes it work, it works. I didn't expect Aloe Berry Styling Gel to have as much holding power as it did - but it held my curls downnnnn! I love thick, heavy gels, and what I found about Aloe Berry Styling Gel is that it locked my curls IN. It gave my curls more of a wavy look, which was a cool switch up from the shrinkage life.

The Bad
I didn't get the super voluminous, plumped up curls I achieve with thicker gels on day 2 and day 3, which was a nice switch up - but not 100% what I look for in the performance of a gel. The hold was epic - but I love my curly curls more than the wavy look. Just a personal preference.

Alikay Naturals Aloe Berry Styling Gel
My curls are more loose and wavy than curly... interesting, but I love my curls!

The Bottom Line
If you have frizzy realness, or hair that eats gel for a living, Aloe Berry Styling Gel is probably the perfect hold and defining product to try out.

Would I Buy it Again?
I could see myself hanging on to it for updos, or styles that don't need a whole lot of volume to work. But to be honest, I'm more partial to Creme Brulee Curling Delight.

Speaking of which...

Active Ingredients

  • Agave Nectar: Sweet extraction of the agave plant that's rich in vitamins and acts as a hydrating humectant - drawing water to and softening the hair.
  • Argan Oil: Oil derived from the seeds of the fruit of the Argan tree, touted for high concentrations of vitamins A and E, among other other claims.
  • Coconut Oil: Oil high in saturated fats (which is why when cold, it is solid). One of the few known oils to penetrate the hair shaft and truly moisturize hair. Coconut oil helps to moisturize, seal, and prevent breakage.

The Good
@chiaricurls told me I would love the Creme Brulee Curling Delight - girlllll you were right! I love the smell, the creaminess, how it captures my curls, but provides touchable definition by day 2. Creme Brulee Curling Delight is a total rockstar in my book. I have to go a little heavy on the more disrespectful areas of my hair - but that's par for the course. But can you really argue with results like these?

Alikay Naturals Creme Brulee Curling Delight

The Bad
The only down side to Creme Brulee Curling Delight I found is that the jar is only 8oz. Because my crown and front middle section don't want me to be great, I had to use extra product and as a result, half the jar was gone in the first use. I was only able to eek out one more wash and go before the jar was empty. Can a sista get 12 ounces or more (on the ground), please?!

The Bottom Line
Creme Brulee Curling Delight is a solid curl defining product that gave me multiple days of curl definition - my curls were STILL poppin' on day 5! Although it's a little pricey for the size, the proof is in the way the product works.

Would I Buy it Again?
I'ma just go'n let these day 5 curls answer that question....

The Good
Mmmmmmmmohhhhhhmygod where do I begin?! Of all the Alikay Naturals products I tried, I love Botanicals the most. I know, it seems crazy. But I really do love a scalp grease more than curl definers, deep conditioners, and hair lotions combined. See, here's the thing. As a kid, I lived for getting my scalp greased. There was just something about that feeling of a finger coated in oily goodness running down the parts in my scalp. Back then, my mom and grandma would use like African Pride or some green Hair Food grease. In 2016, I know better than to slap those on my scalp. So when I saw Botanicals and realized I was getting the naturalistas version of a good ol' fashioned scalp grease, I could hardly contain myself. It's everything I ever wanted in a natural scalp balm and more. I love the bits of nettle, peppermint leaves, and other herbs. I love the cool, slightly tingly feeling I get whenver I use it. Bontanicals takes me back to my childhood - flooding me with warm memories. But beyond that, the stuff is amazing. It soothes my scalp, and works on the hair itself as a great sealant and shine booster. I can't wait to order more!

Alikay Naturals Creme Brulee Curling Delight

In the photo above, I'm demonstrating the Rake & Shake Method using Creme Brulee Curling Delight. But you know what's sealing tha tmoisture in? Botanicals, baby!

The Bad
Absolutely nothing. I love this stuff - a little goes a long way, so the jar lasts a mighty long time.

The Bottom Line
If you love a good scalp greasing as much as I do, Botanicals is right up your alley.

Would I Buy it Again?
In a heartbeat. Keeping it on deck for #summersixteen and beyond!

Active Ingredients

  • Emu Oil: Oil made from the fat of the Emu bird, rich in lineoleic acid and touted to promote skin scell regeneration, awaken the hair follicles, and promote healthy hair growth.
  • Rosemary Leaf Extract: Known growth stimulant and extract, used to prevent dandruff and even premature baldness, as well as enhance highlights. The leaves are known to have relatively high levels of antioxidants.
  • Olive Oil: Oil extracted from the olive fruit, which is rich in high levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which is good for hair growth. Both mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E are good for moisturizing, protecting and nourishing hair. Olive oil makes hair grow stronger and its emollient properties prevent hair loss.
  • Jojoba Oil: Oil closest in molecular weigh to the natural sebum produced by the scalp. It coats the hair shaft (its molecular structure prevents it from penetrating the cuticle) and aids in providing slip and protection.
  • Sweet Almond Oil: Smoothes hair cuticles, promotes hair growth and thickness, boosts shine.
Protein Free?
Yes!

Curly Girl Friendly?
Yes!

The Good
I found it really interesting that the Essential 17 Oil was based in Emu Oil. I've purchased Emu Oil by itself, and that stuff is craaaazy expensive! I'm talking over $20 for like 2oz! While I haven't used the oil long enough to pinpoint any hair growth benefits, I do know that it's great for two things: one, soothing ichy scalp. Two, moving down the shaft of the hair and sealing in moisture and softness from root to tip without making the hair greasy or weighed down. For that, Essential 17 gets The Mane Objective seal of approval!

The Bad
While it's not inherently bad, I'll stick it here as a reminder: remember to shake the bottle before each use. There's horsetail powder and other botanical sediment that settles in the bottom of the bottle as it sits. To make sure the botanical ingredients are steeped evenly in the oil, give it a little shake before using. That's all!

The Bottom Line
If scalp balms aren't your thing, Essential 17 Oil is for you. It makes a great pre-poo, sealing, and softening product without weighing the hair down or making it greasy. A little goes a long way!

Would I Buy it Again?
While I really, really like Essential 17,Botanicals has my heart. If I have to choose, I'm going with Botanicals all day!

Well, that's my take on Alikay Naturals! Have you tried any of the products? Let's chat in the comments! Thanks for checking me out - I hope you found this review helpful!

8 Steps to Keep Your Natural Curls Hydrated and Moisturized All #SummerSixteen
Serving Aqua Mane, Mango Dip, and Knot Gelatin Day 4 Hair Realness... Oh yeah, and I'm engaged now! Lol.
I don't think there's a single person on the planet who doesn't like summer. The tanning, traveling, pool parties and BBQs make the excitement of the season hard to resist. But between sea salt, chlorinated pools, and dry heat (especially for my desert dwelling west coast folks), summer can really do a number on your hair.

Luckily, with these 8 steps, you'll be able to keep your kinks, coils, and curls super moisturized and poppin' all season long.

To bring you guys these tips, I enlisted the help of Soultanicals. If you're a long time reader of the blog, then you know me and Soultanicals go wayyyyyyyy back. Like back to my transitioning days back. One of my favorite things about Soultanicals is that their products always deliver. If the bottle says it's gonna detangle, it detangles. If the deep conditioner is gonnna moisturize and strengthen, guess what happens? Moisture and strength. The amazing fragrances, botanical blends, and vegan ingredients are just bonuses. All Soultanicals products are silicone, paraben, and sulfate free. They're also Curly Girl friendly.

8 Steps to Keep Your Natural Curls Hydrated and Moisturized All #SummerSixteen

For #summersixteen I'm holding tight to these Soultanicals products to keep my hair strong, nourished, moisturized and of course - curls poppin'! For each step, I'll share the corresponding product used, most potent ingredients (top 5-6 after water), whether it's protein free, and tips for use.

(Check out the video to see Power to the Prep-Poo Penetrating Coil Oil, Strand Repair Cuticle Strengthening Recovery Mask, Monoi Moisture Slip Deep Conditioning Fertilizing Dip, Aqua Mane Instant Moisture Potion Leave-In Conditioner, Mango Dip Detangling Slip, and Knot Gelatin Style & Hold Gum in action!)

Step 1: Pre-Poo with  Power to the Pre-Poo Penetrating Coil Oil

What's in It?
  • Water
  • Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Oil extracted from the olive fruit, which is rich in high levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which is good for hair growth. Both mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E are good for moisturizing, protecting and nourishing hair. Olive oil makes hair grow stronger and its emollient properties prevent hair loss.
  • Virgin Coconut Oil: Oil high in saturated fats (which is why when cold, it is solid). One of the few known oils to penetrate the hair shaft and truly moisturize hair. Coconut oil helps to moisturize, seal, and prevent breakage.
  • Organic Palm Kernel Oil: Oil rich in Omega-9 to soften the hair, seal in moisture, and support cuticle health.
  • Amla Extract: Hair conditioning herb that provides scalp-penetrating nourishment. Strengthens hair at the root, promoting stronger, healthier new growth. Can help slow or prevent hair loss, shedding, and breakage.
  • Brahmi Extract: Herb used to strengthen and thicken hair, as well as soothe itchy scalp.
Protein Free?
Yes!

How I Use It
I use Power to the Pre-Poo three ways. First, I use it as a pre-poo treatment - applying the oil to my scalp and throughout the length of my hair. I let the oil sit anywhere from 1 hour to overnight, so that my hair and scalp get all the extra nourishing benefits. Because Power to the Pre-Poo is not a super heavy oil, I'm also able to use it to seal in moisture during styling, and to calm the itchies on my scalp between wash days.

Step 2: Deep Treat with Strand Repair Cuticle Strengthening Recovery Mask

What's in It?
  • Water
  • Cocoa Butter: A powerful emollient and softening agent. Not only does it possess amazing healing and soothing properties for the skin (scalp), it softens hair and promotes shine and elasticity.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Oil extracted from the olive fruit, which is rich in high levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which is good for hair growth. Both mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E are good for moisturizing, protecting and nourishing hair. Olive oil makes hair grow stronger and its emollient properties prevent hair loss.
  • Macadamia Nut Oil: Omega rich oil that helps soften, nourish, seal moisture, and support cuticle health and repair.
  • Cetyl Alcohol: Considered "fatty alcohol" -- NOT to be confused with drying alcohols such as ethyl. Acts as a lubricant, thickener, and emollient. Also gives conditioner its velvety feel without making hair greasy. Is additionally used to keep product ingredients from separating.
  • Behentrominium Methosulfate: Gentle surfactant made from non-GMO rapeseed (canola oil), and is one of the mildest detangling ingredients out there. It doesn't cause buildup or irritation to the scalp.
  • Vegetable Amino Acids: Building blocks of protein that help repair the cuticle layer of the hair.
Protein Free?
Ahh, this goes back to the Mielle Organics debate. While there are no hydrolized proteins in Strand Repair, it is full of amino acids. Proteins are made up of chains of amino acids. The cuticle layer of the hair (we've talked before about how the cuticles lay like shingles on a roof) contain the highest concentration of amino acids. The cuticles of the hair are responsible for everything from porosity and strength, to moisture retention and how the hair behaves (or curls). Glutamic acid, proline, valine, and cystine are very prevalent on the outer layers of the cuticle, and epicuticle, helping to keep the cuticle layer healthy and strong. In deep conditioners like Strand Repair, amino acids help damaged hair restore normal porosity by improving the sealing ability of the cuticle layer. Aminos also strengthen and moisturize the hair, as they attract water. So to wrap this thing up with a neat little bow, the deep conditioner contains elements of proteins that help strengthen, restore the cuticle layer, balance porosity, and stimulate growth.

Is it protein free? Well again - that's for you to decide!

How I Use It
My hair loves protein, but recently I've been all about the aminos. With Strand Repair, I'm able to really zero in on the areas of my hair that need TLC - the bottom third of my curls are what's left of the hard hitting hair color that did a number on my strands. At this stage in the game, the health of the cuticle layer determines whether or not my curls will be loosey goosey and limp, or super supple and springy. To keep my curls popping, I deep treat with Strand Repair biweekly - with steam. Because I don't have a steamer yet ($$$), I do a bootsie steam treatment by wetting a hand towel, microwaving it for 2 minutes, and covering my hair with it. I tie a Target bag over the towel and bam! 10-15 minutes of steam action for free.99. I thought I recorded this in the video, but apparently I recorded myself walking through the house holding the camera - and not the parts of the process that mattered. Go figure.

8 Steps to Keep Your Natural Curls Hydrated and Moisturized All #SummerSixteen

Alternate Deep Treatment: Monoi Moisture Slip Deep Conditioning Fertilizing Dip

What's in It?

  • Water infused with Hibiscus Flower Extract, Ginseng Root Extract, and Yerba Mate Leaf Extract: Herbal infusion that promotes growth, strengthens the follicles, and staves off hair loss by stimulating blood circulation.
  • Propanediol: Plant-based, ECOCERT-approved emollient, solubilizer, and viscosity improving agent. As a natural alternative/replacement for propylene glycol, it improves moisture binding activity which results in silky smooth hair.
  • Behentrimonium Methosulfate: Gentle surfactant made from non-GMO rapeseed (canola oil), and is one of the mildest detangling ingredients out there. It doesn't cause buildup or irritation to the scalp.
  • Monoi Oil: Floral oil made by steeping Tahitian gardenia flowers in coconut oil. In addition to smelling amazing, monoi oil helps soften the hair, add shine, and lock in moisture.
Protein Free?
Yes!

How I Use It
On the weeks I don't use Strand Repair, Monoi Moisture Slip is my go to. Because of the botanical infusions that revitalize, promote growth, and strengthen the follicles, I always apply Monoi Moisture Slip from the roots on down. I follow the same bootsie steam treatment, and the results are amazing. Super soft and moisturized curls that pop! Not to mention, the slip in this stuff is pretty gosh darn epic.

Step 3: Cleanse
This step is totally dependent on your preferences and wash day regimen. I personally co-wash 3 weeks out of the month, and then shampoo the 4th week to clarify, remove buildup, and start with a clean slate. Need help picking a cleanser? Click here for my absolute faves.

What's in It?
  • Water
  • Organic Aloe Vera Juice: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine.
  • Apricot Kernel Oil: Oil rich in vitamins A and E to support scalp health, healthy hair growth, and prevent hair loss. Helps fight signs of aging and damage in hair, and also protects the strands from harmful UV rays.
  • Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate: Non-toxic, biodegradable food-grade additive used to stabilize and improve the mix tolerance of processed foods and products.
Protein Free?
No.

How I Use It
If your hair is perpetually dry, or you live in a drier climate - I highly recommend the dual leave-in conditioner method. I swear by using two leave-ins, because the traditional LOC and LCO methods were not doing it for my curls. Between stringy, greasy realness and white clumpy gobs, I couldn't hang. But ever since I've been using two leave-ins, my curls have been super happy. With Aqua Mane as my primer, I'm able to boost hydration while pH balancing my curls and prepping them for styling. As you saw in the video, my hair soaked Aqua Mane right up! It packs a moisturizing punch without weighing my hair down or making it greasy - but at the same time doesn't interfere with other products I'm layering into my hair. Plus, Aqua Mane makes an amazing refresher spray too!

Step 5: Apply 2nd Leave-In Conditioner - Mango Dip Detangling Slip

What's in It?
  • Botanical Water Infused with Nettle, Horsetail, Coltsfoot, Comfrey, Slippery Elm, Blue Malva, and Chamomile: Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as vitamins, minerals, and chlorophyll to soothe and nourish the scalp. Encourages hair growth by improving circulation, reducing inflammation, strengthening the follicles, and reducing shedding.
  • Organic Aloe Vera Juice: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness.
  • Behentrimonium Methosulfate: Gentle surfactant made from non-GMO rapeseed (canola oil), and is one of the mildest detangling ingredients out there. It doesn't cause buildup or irritation to the scalp.
  • Cetearyl & Sorbitol Olivate: 100% Ecocert and organic PEG-free emulsifyer (mixing agent) derived from olive oil. Reduces water loss, is highly moisturizing, and biomimics the skin's natural oil production.
  • Mango Butter: Rich in beta carotene, essential fatty acids and vitamins A and E. This ingredient also helps to treat dry skin and protect against future dryness.
  • Flaxseed Gel: Made by boiling flaxseeds in water to create a thick, mucous-like gel. Flaxseeds are omega-3 rich and benefit the hair by improving elasticity, smoothing the cuticle, nourishing hair follicles, stimulating growth, easing dry, flaky scalp, and increasing hair strength.
Protein Free?
Yes!

How I Use It
Y'all. Y'ALL. Listen. I've loved Mango Dip Detangling Slip since forever. Well, Since 2013 - and let's face it, in product junkie years, that's an eternity. Mango Dip is leave-in and detangling bae. It made the Christina's Choice cut in 2015. But enough about my mango-fueled obsession. To pull off the dual leave-in conditioner method, I've found that combining one spray with one super creamy leave-in works best - and Aqua Mane and Mango Dip are a match made in natural heaven! Mango Dip is super moisturizing, has tons of slip, and perfectly preps my curls for wash and go styling. It truly is an epic, epic leave-in. Did I mention how epic it is?! On another note, I typically apply my leave-ins inside the shower, for maximum hydration and to minimize frizz. But to show you guys the products in action, I left one section of hair naked. Yes, I sacrificed a quadrant of curls for you guys, lol!

Step 6: Seal with Power to the Pre-Poo
As mentioned previously, Power to the Pre-Poo makes an excellent sealing oils. I take a few drops and work it through my hair from root to ends. That's it and that's all!
8 Steps to Keep Your Natural Curls Hydrated and Moisturized All #SummerSixteen
Well hello, 3rd day curls...
Step 7: Define Curls with Knot Gelatin Style & Hold Gum

What's in It?
  • Water
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil: Lightweight, nutrient rich, and fast absorbing. All the benefits of coconut oil without the heaviness and solidifying in colder temperatures.
  • Glycerin: Generally vegetable-based humectant that absorbs and retains moisture from the air.
  • Algae Extract: Nourishes the hair and scalp - is believed to be able to accelerate hair growth and thicken hair.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate: Salt of hyaluronic acid that penetrates and draws water into the hair and skin - promoting suppleness, shine, and hydration.
  • Olive Wax: Thickener and stability enhancer derived from olive oil.
Protein Free?
Yes! A protein-free gel for the wash & go ladies!

How I Use It
Okay, so here's my absolute most favoritest step, and the secret to my wash and go realness. I've got the Rake & Shake Method down to a science. It takes a lot less time than shingling, and delivers equally epic results that last for days. Rather than explain away, check out the video for the detailed breakdown on how I use Knot Gelatin Style & Hold Gum to rake and shake my curls into super hydrated fabulouslessness. If you don't want to watch the whole vid, skip to the 5:22 mark.  Knot Gelatin, as I mentioned in the video, is a close cousin of Curl Blaze Hair Glaze - but a little thicker and with less of a bite. Knot Gelatin does create a gel cast, but by day 2 that bad boy is gone. Like *NSYNC gone (by the way, that was the JAM back in the day #early2000sboybandrealness). Just make sure you apply enough at the roots, and with all wash and go styles - work on soaking wet hair. If your hair starts drying out as you work through the small sections, rehydrate them with water, or a little Aqua Mane.

Unfortunately, I think Knot Gelatin was a limited release. But don't worry - Soultanicals stays with the curly dopeness. Curl Blaze Hair Glaze, Afro Gel-lato, and Kurl Krush are all amazing, protein-free altenratives! And I've used every, single last one of them.

Step 8: Air Dry and Be Cute!

Nuff said. I don't diffuse in the summer, or at all really (unless I'm hella desperate), because no matter what way you slice it, the blow dryer robs hair of precious moisture. Yes, there's less volume on day 1, but by day 2-5 you'll realize packing the diffuser away was for the best. Now go be cute, with yo' cute #summersixteen wash & go self! Just try to keep your hands out of your hair until it's 100% dry!

#30DaysofDope : Challenging Myself to Be My Best Self

You ever feel like you were doing just ok? Like, things are good...not great, but good? Comfortable, because everything is alright - but somehow, you're not quite satisfied?

That's me right now.

And while I've made (and continue to make) decent progress toward my 2016 goals, I feel like I never really flipped the switch - almost like I stumbled my way through to June. Sure, I met some goals along the way, but it doesn't feel like I worked hard at it. Not that my goals were too easy - but more like some blessings just unexpectedly fell in my lap (thanks, Jesus!

On the real, we're literally halfway through 2016 and I'm ready to flip the switch! So here I am, launching #30DaysofDope to get myself in high gear and experience what it's like to operate in dopeness for 30 days straight. I'm intimidated. I'm scared I'll fail.

But I'm ready to do it afraid.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you became the best version of yourself, consistently - for 30 days? That's the question I'm asking myself. So for the next 30 days, I'm challenging myself to #30DaysofDope living in these 4 major areas of my life:

Spiritually Dope
It's no secret that I am a child of God, and Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. But lately, I've been feeling the need to re-root myself in His word. So for the next 30 days, I'm spending intentional time with God - reading, praying, journaling, and doing my absolute best to live His word. My spiritual goal for 2016 was to let my light shine before others, that they may see my good deeds and glorify my Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16) - and I'm keeping that at heart as I embark on this phase of my spiritual journey. By the way, if you have any recommendations for a dope devotional that runs for at least 30 days, please drop it in the comments below!

Physically Dope
My #EveryDayFitness Challenge taught me a lot. Primarily that by not setting smart goals, you'll set yourself up to fail. It also taught me that you can't out-exercise a bad diet. My intentions were noble, but the idea of working out every single day is not sustainable. I work a full-time, 40 hour per week job. I blog and work on independent projects outside of work. I have a fiance that I very much love and enjoy spending time with. Ditto for family. I'm involved in my church, I love cooking, I clean and maintain our (albeit, childless) house, and I like to go out and have fun. I'm a regular person, with fifty-leven other things to do besides live in the gym. I have fitness goals, fasho. But I'm not (nor will I ever be) one of those folks who's obsessed with fitness to the tune of working out 3 times per day, and meal prepping asparagus and sweet potatoes every week.

So for the next 30 days, I'm committing myself to 4 days of legit cardio and weight training, and 1 day of fun activity a week. That breaks down to being active 5 out of 7 days a week, with one of those days involving something fun like golf, tennis, bowling, walking in the sand at the beach, or heck - even gardening!

Oh, and I hate asparagus.

Dope Eating
So, remember what I said a few lines back about not being able to out-exercise a bad diet, and not being about that asparagus and sweet potato life? Yeah, I gotta work on that. But asparagus is not a part of the plan, I can tell you that much. Ever since Samuel and I moved in together, I've found myself cooking a lot more - which I love. And the meals aren't too terrible either. I never fry anything, I don't believe in white flour (King Arthur flour or bust), I converted Samuel to unsweetened almond milk (hey Califia), and I make spaghetti with brown rice and quinoa pasta from Trader Joe's. I can make anyone a believer in kale, and my baked wontons are so crunchy, you won't miss the grease. Sidebar: I often share my culinary exploits on Snapchat, so add me there.

#30DaysofDope : Challenging Myself to Be My Best Self

But back to this eating thing. Thanks to some independent research and advice from a longtime friend who's become a fitness and motivational coach, I've learned a lot about macros and flexible dieting lately. And from looking at what I eat on MyFitnessPal (username: tinap17), I don't consume enough protein, and I eat too many carbs. Plus, I totally know that I have a thing for sugar. So in an effort to discipline myself to make better food choices, for the next 30 days I'll be:
  • Using a food scale and measuring devices to accurately calculate my food intake every day (with the obvious exception being things like going to dinner with family)
  • Aiming to achieve 100% of my 40-20-40 macro goals (I'll break this down in another post, but for now just know that 40% of my calories need to be from protein, 20% from fat, and 40%  from carbohydrates)
  • Consuming no alcohol (bye bye, wine)
  • Taking all the right supplements - including protein. Right now, my vitamin intake is pretty legit. I'm going to kick things up a notch and discipline myself to incorporate more protein in my diet - in the form of Neocell's Collagen Sport (I'll share more about this on 30daysofdope.com)
  • Developing a healthier relationship with sugar. Meaning, keeping "bad" sweet treats to a minimum (something small, like once a week), and minimizing my sugar intake during the week.
  • Drinking more water, yo!
Mentally Dope
When it comes to success and achieving goals, I know that 80% of it is mindset and believing that you can. The other 20% is putting in work. Thanks to having a dope boss who cares about my personal development, I've spent 2016 reading (and finishing!) a new book every month. So needless to say, I'll be keeping that trend of challenging myself mentally in that area going.

But the other part of being mentally dope is being mindful of the messages I send to myself. So for the next 30 days, I'm going to eliminate the phrase "I can't" from my vocabulary when speaking of my own capabilities. I'm also killing off any sort of deprecating or negative self-talk. Because I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and all things are possible for those who believe.

Are you still with me? Good.

Now, here's the next part. Although I'm doing this challenge for myself, I've got a few of my closest framily (yes, framily) joining me. And they're all outlining their own personal definitions of what it means to be dope for 30 days. But guess what?

You can join me too!

If you're down to challenge yourself to be the best version of yourself for the next 30 days, then head on over to 30daysofdope.com. I just launched the site (literally, last night), but you can drop your e-mail in and sign up to be on the list. That way we can talk, support each other, and navigate through 30 days of pure, unadulterated excellence - together.

#30DaysofDope Update: Week 1

I'm not gonna lie y'all, it's been exactly one week and I don't feel as dope as I thought I would. I thought I'd be riding some kind of high from this experience, but really it feels more like I'm trying to root myself so this excellence thing can really take hold.

If I had to give myself a grade for last week, it would be a C+ bordering on a B-. I know, neither of those are the A+ I wanted, but a C+ with effort is better than getting an F for not even showing up. Besides, if I had to say I learned one thing last week, it's that excellence is relative. Because we can never truly calculate what each day holds for us, it's important to evaluate excellence in the proper context.

Read up on what #30DaysofDope is all about here!

For example, excellence on a Tuesday might be waking up at 5:45am, hitting 30 minutes of cardio, spending 30 minutes in prayer and reading the Bible, slaying at work for 8 hours, cooking a dope dinner, and hitting the gym. Excellence on that same Thursday might mean waking up at 7am, spending 20 minutes in prayer, and taking a brisk walk for 20 minutes at the end of the day. In either scenario, all that matters is that you showed up, gave it your best, and pushed yourself beyond what your baser instincts want you to do.

But enough about that - let's chat about how last week went.

Spiritually Dope Update
Spiritually, last week was a good week. By day 2, I was overwhelmed with gratitude and just feeling deeply appreciative for everything. I was literally taken aback by how much God has done for me, and I've made it a point to thank Him for the things I so easily take for granted. Right now I'm using The Power of Being Thankful devotional by Joyce Meyer (on the YouVersion app) to guide my studies and prayer time, but it's only 15 days. Still open to reading recommendations!

#30DaysofDope Update: Here's What Happened Week 1!

Physically Dope Update
Last week got off to a pretty dope start. I killed it in the gym Monday thru Wednesday - and had a dope moment Wednesday where I pushed past that "I don't feel like it" mindset and went hard in the paint. It felt good. It felt right. I want that feeling to kick off tomorrow, too. A few mornings I even got up and did some extra cardio on the elliptical in my home office. Unfortunately, Thursday is where things took a downward turn. I literally worked 11 hours straight (5am to 4pm), and by the time I was done, I was mentally and physically exhausted. So I skipped the gym, knowing that sometimes it's better to rest. I wanted to hit the gym Friday, but after another full work day, I still wasn't back in balance. (Sidebar: tt's crazy how a tough day at work can have a ripple effect all the way around!) So I rested again - and went to the gym Saturday with Samuel after breakfast with my mom and sister.

4 out of 7 days I was in the gym making it happen. Not exactly my goal, but better than what it could have been.

#30DaysofDope Update: Here's What Happened Week 1!

Dope Eating Update
I've definitely been putting my food scale, measuring cups, and spoons to use. It's a pain, but something I'm actively working to train myself to do until I can accurately eyeball measurements and macros. Did I do it every day? Nope - so shame on me. But I'm building out the habit. Excellence is definitely in progress. I did it for like 70% of my meals and snacks last week, which is better than the once or twice a week I was doing before. One cool thing I did find out - remember I mentioned using my Neocell Collagen Sport protein powder to meet my protein goals? THAT is working! I almost threw a party for myself on Monday when, for the first time like ever, I hit my protein goal. So yep, I'm all over that! And taking my vitamins and supplements, too!

There's an open bottle of wine in my fridge, from before I started #30DaysofDope. I thought it would taunt me every evening at dinnertime - but nope! I haven't missed it. If I want flavor with my meal, I drink Arrowhead Sparkling Spring Water (black cherry and raspberry lime are lit!) and maybe twice I had some Trader Joe's Sparkling Lemonade. Other than that, it's water. And my skin is thanking me for it.

So, about this sugar thing. It's going and I'm being excellent...if by excellent we mean I didn't run to Susiecakes for a slice of Vanilla Celebration Cake. The sweet tooth is real, but I'm managing. When I want something sweet, I lean on Enlightened Ice Cream Bars (80-90 calories, low in sugar, high in protein and fiber), and YouFreshNaturals Cookie Dough Muscle Frosting. Baby steps.

Mentally Dope
Last week, I found myself talking to myself more than I have in a while. But not in a "I talk to myself 'cause there is no one to talk to" kinda way (#shoutout to Christoper Williams aka Kareem from the bank in New Jack City) - more like positively reinforcing myself. Like, "Christina, you got this. Keep going. You good, girl. You good. Be !%#$*?& DOPE!" And to be honest, it works. When you believe in yourself, hype yourself up, and talk to yourself like you love yourself, amazing things happen.

#30DaysofDope Update: Here's What Happened Week 1!

Brands That Love Black Money... Where You At?!

I don't have a lot of words right now, so I'm gonna keep this brief and to the point. In fact, I don't have the desire to do much of anything right now. In the wake of the Black body count that keeps rising at the hands of the overseer "law enforcement", I'm finding it increasingly difficult to have energy. To function. To string together a coherent thought that doesn't bring me to tears.

Last night I prayed. Hard. I prayed for my fiance. My dad. My brother. My brother-in-law. My three little nephews. My uncles. Cousins. Friends. I prayed for God's protection over their lives. I prayed for their safety. I normally pray that prayer, because we live in a world rife with violence, theft, assault, robbery, kidnapping, car accidents, etc. But last night, I prayed that prayer fervently because Black men are literally being executed by police officers for simply existing.

Black people all across the country are living in a state of panic induced fear. We're afraid that our significant other, our brother, our father - will be next. Murdered in cold blood without provocation. We're in pain. We're angry. We feel helpless. There's anguish. Hurt. And the most bitter pill we're swallowing is injustice. Because we've seen this play out exactly 136 times since 2016 started. There will be no justice. There will be no conviction.

Because ultimately, Black lives don't matter...but Black dollars do.

And therein lies the rub.

This morning, as I did my #MorningMillennial social media scroll, I noticed something on Instagram. Brands like Carol's Daughter, Devacurl, Cantu, Dark & Lovely, and hell, even Shea Moisture carried on as if two Black men hadn't been murdered in cold blood by police officers in 24 hours.

They posted about products, makeup, Essence Fest recaps, and more.

And I'm tired of it.

Y'all were gung-ho to post about the 4th of July...but now it's July 7th and you're silent.

I don't know about you, but today, more than any day - I need love. I need encouragement. I need support. To have my humanity reaffirmed. To know that people are at least awake (if not woke), and are allies.

I need to know that if I spend my money with you, that you value me beyond your bottom line.

I don't know about you, but I'll be going through my social media with a fine tooth comb. Paying closer attention to who I give my visual currency to. Loving a little harder on Black-owned brands that stand with me.

I'm just one person though.

Your move.

Always give...

Y'all.

Today is officially the 23rd day of #30DaysofDope. Yes! 23 days down. 7 to go.

And I couldn't be more thrilled.

I was supposed to put this post up yesterday, but I had to go be dope in other areas so I prioritized, and this took a back seat. #justbeinghonest

The past two weeks has had its share of ups and downs, but that's par for the course when it comes to journeys of personal excellence. So without much delay, let's jump right in.

Spiritually Dope Update
The events of this past week has worn on us all. I'd be remissed if I didn't acknowledge that the apparent open season hunting of Black lives in America has taken a toll on us psychologically, physically, and spiritually. But if nothing else, the past few weeks have reminded me of what it's like to have an open, honest conversation with God. Not just hallelujahs and holy praises, but to really talk to God. To break down that wall we have, set aside all the spiritual language, and talk to God. Sometimes, I didn't even have the words - but that's okay, cause Romans 8:26-27.

I didn't journal every day, which isn't dope. That was one of my goals, and I'm determined to get back on track this week. #noexcuses

I also experienced God at work, at work.

I don't talk a lot about my job, but for those of you that don't know - I work full time in digital marketing. I'm blessed to work for an agency owned and operated by two of the dopest Black women I've ever met. And on Thursday of last week, following the the tragedies of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile my bosses pulled the team together on a call. For about an hour, work operations ceased. We shared our thoughts. Our feelings. Our fears. We validated each other's feelings. And we prayed. It was one of the most powerful reconciliations of my Blackness and my faith that I've ever experienced. And I'm grateful to God for it.

Physically Dope Update
Y'all, I don't like to brag or boast, but I sure as heck am about to pat myself on the back. I've been crushing it in the gym. I do HIIT runs on the treadmill at least three times a week (the 4th time I may walk, or hit the stairmaster), and I'm putting up heavy weights. I'm doin' the damn thang. As a result, some physical changes are occuring, but I'm holding off on "results" pics until after the 30 days is up. But on another note, my attitude toward the gym is shifting again - and this journey has been several years in the making. When I first started working out (like 5 years ago), I hated every second of it. Then I liked it. Then I hated it again. Then, I grew to a space where I could tolerate it, but only certain exercises. At the beginning of #30DaysofDope, I wasn't wild about the gym, but there was a 75% chance you could convince me to go. Some days and some workouts were better than others. Right now, that's changing again. I'm starting to vibe with the gym. Starting to feel like its my place to show up and be EXCELLENT. I can get used to this.

450lb Leg Press.
Dope Eating Update
I'm sure you've probably seen this meme floating around the social medias at some point:

#truth
...and I'm here to tell you that it/s absolutely true. Changing your eating habits is one of the most difficult things to do. Changing eating habits, counting macros, using a food scale, having discipline.. all that is a work in progress. But I'm getting better - and my discipline in those areas is on the rise. I create recipes in MyFitnessPal for accurate calorie and macro counts. Drinking lots of water. Managing my sweet tooth.

Funny story there - because I've been doing pretty well, I treated myself to that Susiecakes on Saturday. And when I tell you...it jacked my stomach UP... Listen. My stomach was cramped up all night. I won't go into too much detail, but I learned my lesson. At this point in my life, there's a growing list of things I used to love that I literally cannot stomach anymore. McDonald's is one of them. McDonald's for me = instantaneous gastrointestinal distress. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm heading down that same path with that super rich Susiecakes. Le sigh. Looks like I'm back to making protein cookies and eating Muscle Butter.

Perspective.

Mentally Dope Update
I'm at the point now where if I feel myself being any less than excellent, I say, "Christina, go be DOPE." Sometimes I respond to myself with, "I don't feel like it!" - but the other 90% of the time I go about my business of being excellent. And that's what this is about - progress, not perfection. I've told folks many times that excellence is relative, and your personal best is not going to look the same every day. I'm getting comfortable with that, and owning my excellence.

Well, that's all for weeks 2 and 3.. Stay tuned for the next post!

Thank you guys for coming along on this journey to personal excellence. If you're just now catching up and you want in - no wories! You can join me now! #30DaysofDope is DONE! Here's What I Learned.

Day 30/30!
There's nothing more gratifying than starting something and seeing it through to completion. Especially for someone like me - a chronic starter. Ok, #TruthTellingTime I, Christina Patrice am a chronic starter. I'm super awesomely great at having cool ideas, brainstorming, plotting, planning, and strategizing around those ideas. I'm totally a launch person. But I'm a terrible finisher. About halfway through, I start losing steam, or in true Christina Patrice fashion, I get distracted by another idea.

But with #30DaysofDope I challenged myself - not just to be a finisher, but finish in the best possible way. I took my weak points head on for 30 days straight, and emerged a better person for it. For each area of dopeness that I challenged myself to, I'm gonna share the ups, downs, and the ultimate lesson I learned.

Oh, and if you missed this cycle of #30DaysofDope, don't worry. I'll be kicking it off bigger and better in August!

Let's dive in!

Spiritually Dope Update
The single best part of being spiritually dope is that indescribable peace that comes from being connected to God. Not that I walked through the past 30 days with ease (that's hardly the case), but that even in my low moments, even in my frustrations, I didn't feel hopeless. I didn't feel stuck. And that feeling - more than anything else, is invaluable. For the first half of #30DaysofDope, I read The Power of Being Thankful devotional, and I really enjoyed it. For the last few days, I've been reading Lifehacks: Practical Tips for Godly Habitsand it's been nothing short of amazing. Did you know that sleep was a spiritual activity?! That lesson alone blew my mind. If you have the app (and I'm sure you do, because everybody and they mama does), open YouVersion and check for Lifehacks under plans, or just click here via desktop.

Read the devotion on sleep. It'll blow your mind.
Did I journal every day like I set out to? No. Did I embark on a more intentional relationship with God? Absolutely. Did I live out Matthew 5:16? I tried - and I still am trying. Because ultimately, none of this is about me. It's about God's glory.

Physically Dope Update
Pardon me for a moment while I feel myself. When it comes to physical dopeness, I crushed it. Like, I'm legitimately proud of myself. I set goals - to do 4 days of cardio and strength training, with 1 day of "other" activity per week. I didn't do much "othering", but I did crush the gym 5 days a week, every week. And I've got the MyFitnessPal records to prove it. Physically, I'm stronger. My endurance is improving. I can even run HIIT sprints a lil' faster (I'm maxing at 7mph without feeling like I'm about to pass out, fall, or break my ankles). As I type this post, I'm sore as heck from yesterday's upper body workout, but I love the feeling.

As promised, some before and after realness.
When I looked at this picture of myself before #30DaysofDope (its from a month before I started the challenge...but there's no difference in my appearance from May to June), I was little disappointed at first. I thought to myself - in two months, I don't look that different. But then I realized three very important things. One - that major changes take time. Two - I did #30DaysofDope not as some quick transformation gimmick, but to start building out the habit of personal excellence. Three - the biggest changes are the ones unseen. The physical changes will come, no doubt...as long as I keep those three things at the forefront of my mind.

Dope Eating Update
About halfway through #30DaysofDope, I had a realization. I'm not about that #mealprep life. Because I follow a lot of fitness related people and pages, my explore feed on Instagram is often inundated with 4x5 grids of transparent containers with chicken breasts, asparagus, and sweet potatoes. Yo, get it how you live. I'm not knocking you. But I'm not that girl. I can barely have the same meal for dinner two nights in a row, let alone 7 days a week. But then I realized, when it came to food, I just needed to make sure I was making the best possible decisions for my meals. That meant taking the foods I like and making them macro-friendly. Same for desserts.
Clockwise: baked chicken wings, clean-ish cornbread, kale with smoked turkey, and red beans (rice optional). #macrofriendly
Full transparency moment: I don't know everything there is to know about macros. I learned how to count them, but really at this point in my journey I'm like the kid in Algebra II with the TI-83 calculator (#highschoolmemories) - relying on technology to do the work for me. I lean heavy on MyFitnessPal, but for this first phase of my journey, that's okay. Again, building out habits. Weighing food. Calculating macros and calories for recipes I create. Drinking lots of water. Taking my vitamins. Drinking my protein. My goal going forward is to create some hybrid of clean eating/iffym (if it fits your macros) that helps me look good, feel good, and that tastes good.

My next post on 30daysofdope.com will be about the vitamins and supplements that I've been taking that have been suuuuper clutch for me. I'll also be sharing some macro-friendly recipes and food swaps. Stay tuned for those!

Mentally Dope Update
During the course of #30DaysofDope I had one major revelation, and I shared it in my last update. In case you missed it, that revelation was this: excellence is relative. One day, excellence can mean waking up at 6am and running two miles before work. Another day, excellence is simply the act of even showing up to work because you're exhausted (mentally or physically). The major key I learned was not to beat myself up over the shifting in levels of "accomplishment". If I could look at myself and say, I did my best, then I did my best. End of story.

And if it wasn't my best? I still did better by admitting that to myself, instead of pretending like it was. Either way, it's a win.

Overall, I had a great experience with #30DaysofDope. Was it as miraculously transformative as I had hoped? No. But am I a better person than I was 30 days ago? Absolutely. Like I said before, if you missed the boat this go-round, be sure you visit www.30daysofdope.com and get on the e-mail list, so you don't miss the August launch.

Me and my frenemy, the stairmaster.

Can The Mane Choice REALLY Cut Your Wash Day In Half?

$

0

If you're no stranger 'round these parts, then you know these four things are the pillars upon which The Mane Objective Stands:
  1. Helping others by sharing my own journey
  2. Integrity
  3. Details and Evidence
  4. Product Junkie-ism
So you know, like I know, that when a brand makes a claim about their product - I'm gonna investigate it.

When The Mane Choice debuted their Easy on the Curls collection, I was like, "Oooh! Cool!" When I noticed they had re-formulated their Green Tea & Carrot Mask Treatment, I was like, "Ohhhh-kay now!" (because I had always wanted to try it, but heard that those who loved it wish it had more slip). And THEN they said, "Easy on the Curls will cut your wash day in half!" and I was like, SKRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTT!

Hol' up.

Wayment.

You mean to tell me, that your products are quite literally, going to cut my wash day in half? On a shampoo day no less?

I'm all ears.

So I reached out to The Mane Choice team, and told them my idea - that I wanted to put their claims to the test. On video. They loved the idea, so here we are!

Before I get into the nitty gritty, I want you to know these things about my wash day(s)
  • I have two types of wash days: co-wash and shampoo wash.
  • Co-wash days run me about 45 minutes to detangle, cleanse, and deep condition - because I use the same product to detangle and co-wash my hair.
  • Shampoo days run me at least an hour and 10 minutes, because I always detangle my hair prior to shampooing (30 minutes), shampoo in sections (20 minutes), and then deep condition (20 minutes).
For the purposes of the #WashDayChallenge, I'm using the timing from my shampoo wash days. To tackle my 5 day old tangled tresses (I normally wash my hair every 4-5 days), I'm using The Mane Choice Easy on the Curls Detangling Hydration Shampoo, Detangling Hydration Conditioner, and Green Tea & Carrot Deep Strengthening & Restorative Mask Treatment.

To see this wash day unfold in real time, watch the video! Then, keep scrolling for details on the products used.

Detangling Hydration Conditioner
Active Ingredients
  • Purified Water
  • Aloe Vera Leaf Juice: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness by sealing the cuticle layer.
  • Glycerin: Generally vegetable-based humectant that absorbs and retains moisture from the air.
  • Avocado Oil: Omega 3-rich nourishing oil extract that can enhances shine, moisture retention, softness, and elasticity in hair.
  • Cetyl Alcohol: Considered "fatty alcohol" -- NOT to be confused with drying alcohols such as ethyl. Acts as a lubricant, thickener, and emollient. Also give conditioner its velvety feel without making hair greasy. Is additionally used to keep product ingredients from separating.
  • Cetrimonium Chloride: Compound close in composition to Behentrimonium Chloride. In addition to having the same penetrating, conditioning, and anti-static properties, centrimonium chloride has been scientifically proven to strengthen the hair when activated by heat.
  • Castor Oil

How I Used It
Any time I shampoo my hair, I alllllways pre-treat it with conditioner. Sometimes oil (rarely), but mainly conditioner. This serves two purposes - one, to get the detangling process started and two - it gets the hydration party started and counteracts the stripping nature of shampoo without compromising cleaning ability. That's how I used the Detangling Hydration Conditioner. I soaked my hair with water (the white buildup you see in the video is the second coming of my gobs of gel being reactivated by the water). I then covered my hair in the conditioner, and set out to separate it in to four sections to finger detangle, one by one. I kept a spray bottle of warm water on standby, to help saturate each section - which is what I do on shampoo days, to avoid wasting tons of water in the shower on detangling only.

The Verdict
Y'all. Y'ALL. Lean in. I need to tell you something. Never, not never in my almost three years of being natural life, have I EVAH finger detangled my entire head of hair in under 10 minutes. Without even being in the shower. The Detangling Hydration Conditioner is the real deal. We're talking on 5 day old hair here - hair that hasn't come close to a finger, comb, or anything since my last wash. Hair that's been worked out on, slept on, and gone with the wind.

On the ingredient tip, the Detangling Hydration Conditioner contains some of my absolute favorite ingredients - like aloe vera, avocado oil, and cetrimonium chloride. Hear me out though. My hair loves anything with aloe, because it's pH balancing, shine enhancing, and scalp soothing properties. Avocado oil is one of my favorite in-product oils because it's not too heavy or too light. And let me love on cetrimonium chloride for a minute. I've discussed this ingredient before when it comes to strengthening the hair and straightening it. When combined with heat, it improves the tensile strength of hair (read: less breakage). Although I didn't use it with heat for the Wash Day Challenge, it's good to know that the Detangling Hydration Conditioner is valuable for so much more than detangling.

Official Time: 7 minutes and 10 seconds to completely detangle my hair.

Detangling Hydration Shampoo
Active Ingredients
  • Purified Water
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine: Coconut oil-derived detergent, anti-static, and hair conditioning agent.
  • Cetrimonium Chloride: Compound close in composition to Behentrimonium Chloride. In addition to having the same penetrating, conditioning, and anti-static properties, centrimonium chloride has been scientifically proven to strengthen the hair when activated by heat.
  • Chamomile Flower: An extraction of chamomile that provides soothing, anti-inflammatory support to the scalp and follicles.
  • Clary Leaf Extract: Herbal extract of the clary sage leaf with antibacterial properties that also encourages growth and slows shedding.
  • Lavender Extract: Soothing, anti-inflammatory herbal extraction.
  • Birch Bark Extract: Anti-inflammatory and scalp-soothing extract that promotes healthy skin, fights dandruff, eczema, and psoriasis, while slowing hair loss.

How I Used It
Immediately following the Detangling Hydration Conditioner, I rinsed my hair and got right to shampooing. As I mentioned previously, I shampoo in sections (it's just easier that way), and today was no exception. As you can see in the video, the Detangling Hydration Shampoo was EVERYTHING. I couldn't fake or make my reaction up. I was legit shocked. And impressed.  I shampooed my hair in record time - especially considering that I was not in the shower (running water does wonders for slip).

The Verdict
Winner winner chicken dinner! The Mane Choice Detangling Hydration Shampoo is the truth. La verdad. Sorry, I just started watching Power this week (literally starting with season 1) and all the espanol got me feeling like I'm bilingual lol. But I digress. There's a special place in my heart for shampoos that don't make your hair feel like a brillo pad in the desert upon contact. And truthfully, there are only an elite few shampoos that don't have this effect on my hair. The Detangling Hydration Shampoo is now one of them. Not only do I love the major slippage, the botanical ingredients are out of this world. Clean scalp, clean hair - not dried out or crispy in the slightest. Talk about a win!

Official Time: 16 minutes and 53 seconds.

Green Tea & Carrot Deep Strengthening & Restorative Mask Treatment
Active Ingredients
  • Purified Water
  • Aloe Vera Leaf Juice Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness by sealing the cuticle layer.
  • Coconut Oil: oil high in saturated fats (which is why when cold, it is solid). One of the few known oils to penetrate the hair shaft and truly moisturize hair. Coconut oil helps to moisturize, seal, and prevent breakage.
  • Honey Extract: Humectant and emollient which helps soften, smooth, and retain moisture in the hair. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals, which can help condition the hair leaving it shiny and soft. Honey also has antibacterial and antioxidant properties which help reverse and prevent damage, and promote scalp health.
  • Green Tea Extract: Natural antioxidant and proven DHT blocker (one of the main causes of hair loss), antibiotic, and stimulates blood circulation to follicles - which promotes hair growth.
  • Sunflower Seed Oil: Pressed oil of the sunflower seed, rich in omegas 6 and 9 which help stimulate growth, improve elasticity, and ciments the cuticle layers to help improve moisture retention and correct porosity issues.

How I Used It
The Green Tea & Carrot Deep Strengthening & Restorative Mask Treatment label says to apply the product generously from root to end after shampooing - then to cover with a plastic cap and sit under the dryer for 15 minutes, or up to an hour without heat. Because I never deep condition for an hour (it's just not in the cards for me, unless I'm out running errands), I opted for the 15 minute session. When it comes to deep conditioning, I leave no strand uncovered - so I was extra generous with my application here.

The Verdict
First of all, I wanna just say that the Green Tea & Carrot Deep Strengthening & Restorative Mask Treatment is ah-MAY-zing. I see why everybody went nuts over this deep conditioner when it was released. Between the super moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera, honey, and coconut oil, and the strengthening and stimulating ingredients like green tea extract, biotin, and hydrolyzed wheat protein made my strands uuuuuuuber happy. Y'all know I love me some protein. And the slip was legit. After rinsing out the deep treatment, my hair looked and felt intensely nourished and restored. My curls was paaahhhpin!

Official Time: 39 minutes and 28 seconds for an ENTIRE wash day including deep conditioning!!!

You guys, I was over the MOON hype when I came from rinsing my hair, and realized that it literally took me half the normal time to get through my wash day.

The hype is real.

The results are real.

Y'all... The Mane Choice is the real deal!

My Be Kekoa Salon Curly Cut Experience

My Be Kekoa Curly Cut Experience

Yessss, I did it again! I got another haircut y'all!

In case you're keeping count (you're probably not, and that's 137% okay - you have better things to remember lol), this makes my third official curly cut. My first curly cut was at Devachan Culver City with Sergio - when I officially had my heat damage removed and stepped into 100% natural life. The second cut was again at Devachan Culver City with Carleen, who rocked my curly cut and red color.

This third cut was done by none other than Brandie Kekoa, of Be Kekoa Healthy Hair Studio in Temecula, California! For those of you guys who didn't know, in addition to making my most favoritest co-wash EVER Be (Bae) Clean, Be Kekoa is also a full service salon run by Brandie and her amazing staff (#shoutout to Audra and Charmaine!) in Temecula. Seriously - Be Kekoa is like 5 minutes from the wineries (more on that later).

Brandie has already taken me from red to black, and from curly to straight. This time around, her task was to take me from hot mess to hot mama! Okay, that was corny, but really. My hair was a hot mess for about 52 different reasons. Here were the top 4:
  1. I've got multiple textures with disrespectful shrinkage. The back of my hair hangs looser and longer, while the front shrinks up (three different ways, of course - ranging from deep wave to ringlet). This means that as my hair grows, mushroom mullet is the result.
  2. My hair has color damage. The red was gorgeous, but it did a number on my curls. You guys may not have been able to tell, because I go stealth mode about treating it and nursing it back to health, but it's there. My hair was about 75% healthy at the time of my cut (meaning only about 25% damage on my ends), but it was still visible damage. Damage - whether it be from color, heat, or overmanipulation, changes your hair and makes it hard to work with. But I've got some tips for that coming very soon.
  3. Because of #1 and #2, I found myself playing with scissors. A LOT. More than your standard seasonal trim, with a whole lot less precision and patience. This made for an absolute, unmitigated disaster. My hair was not only uneven because of mullet realness, but because I would just snip when I saw a tapered or scraggly end with no sort of concept for balance, evenness, proportion, shape - none of that. Because I'm not a stylist and I don't know what any of that means anyway.
  4. And, I hadn't had a professional shaping since 2014. Yes, I've had DIY trims, and professional trims when getting my hair straightened - but no professional curly cut in almost two years.
All of those factors combined made for an extravagant, hot mess. Needless to say, Brandie had her work cut out for her. But as you'll see in the pictures, she did the darn thing!

My Be Kekoa Curly Cut Experience
For your reference, my mushroom mullet o' curly hot mess.
My sister April also had an appointment, for the same service - a curly cut. April hadn't been to Brandie in nearly a year, but in the in-between time, she'd gone to another salon and got her hair straightened around her birthday. And yep, you guessed it - heat damage. Brandie's curly cut for April was designed to help give her shape, while nursing the heat damaged area back to health.

Yassssssss #twistoutslayage
Regardless of what service you book with Brandie, it starts with a consultation - which I love. She communicates clearly and precisely, and seeks to genuinely understand what end result you want to achieve. At the same time, she's real with you. Brandie, like other licensed professionals are stylists - not miracle workers. I knew going in that between my hair's odd shape, my multitude of textures, and how I butchered my hair - that I wasn't going to get a shape identical to the pictures I showed Brandie. But she got me close - super close. So much so that as my hair grows out, I'm confident that it will fill in to exactly where I wanted it to be.

My Be Kekoa Curly Cut Experience
My curls are happier on the floor than on my head!
After my consultation, Brandie went to work her curly magic on my tresses, doing a dry, curl-by-curl cut. Brandie's done a number of certifications and natural hair trainings in her 10 year career - getting education and information everywhere from Devachan to Titi and Miko Branch (Miss Jessie's), and even celeb stylist Felicia Leatherwood (hey girl hey!). On top of that, Brandie is a natural hair veteran in her own right - and she's got the super healthy tresses to prove it.

Sidebar: that's one of the main things I love about Brandie. She walks the walk and talks the talk. I know folks are shelling out rent and car note sized payments to see other curly stylists in Southern California (I'm thinking of one particular fellow who shall remain nameless because I'm still a child of God), but there's something deeply comforting about sitting in the chair of someone who knows exactly what you're dealing with. Someone who doesn't just proclaim themselves to be an expert on textured hair because it's cool and profitable, but who literally has to wake up in the morning like you and I, and work with kinks, coils, and curls, before heading in to work. Brandie doesn't talk down to you, she won't shade you for using silicones and shea butter, or judge you for occasionally flat ironing. And she won't chastise you for making mistakes with your hair - she simply educates you on how to take care of it properly. Oh, and she doesn't shy away from any texture. Brandie's clients range from bone straight and barely curled to super kinky. I've sat in her salon enough times (as a client and as a spectator) to see her do it all.

Now back to my experience. After the dry cut, Brandie cross-checked her work to make sure that even though my textures were different, the cut was balanced and even. That impressed me so much - even with all the aforementioned drama I had going on with my curls, Brandie still made it happen.

Next came my absolute favorite part of the experience - the wash! I know y'all feel me here...ain't NOTHING like having someone else cleanse and massage your scalp. Audra has such blessed hands... I could have laid in that bowl forever! That scalp scrub and massage was heaven sent. After cleansing, Audra covered my tresses with the Monoi Orangesicle Protein Smoothie (sigh... an in-salon only treatment, no to go containers!), and sat me under Bertha, the mother of all steamers.

My Be Kekoa Curly Cut Experience
Bertha played ZERO games.
Post steam, it was time to get back in Brandie's chair for my wash and go styling and for her to check the cut again on fully detangled hair. Because it was hot as all get out of town in Temecula, I opted to air dry on my way back to LA.

Unfortunately, I couldn't take my "after" shots in the salon, thanks to a hot mess mishap. There was a guy (the name of his company escapes me) and his son who visited the salon, selling soul food. Yes, soul food on demand. And we were STARVING. So, April got chicken wings and mac and cheese, and I settled for corn bread stuffed with sweet potatoes and greens. Yes, it was every bit of magical as you could imagine. Because I'm not a huge fan of fried chicken, and I don't know how to eat wings (according to everyone who's ever gone out to eat with me), I only took one of April's wings. And then, I forgot to wash my hands after eating. So while sitting under the steamer, I rubbed my eyes. And then rubbed, and rubbed, and rubbed, and rubbed - until they were puffy and bloodshot red. I looked high as a kite - a likely reaction to the oil and seasonings on my fingers.

I didn't want y'all thinking Brandie was running a salon full of stoners, so I delayed on the pics. But now - they're all in this post! So get your fill of these selfies, and more to come!

My Be Kekoa Curly Cut Experience
I love how rounded and full it is!

I'm Taking the Rapunzel Hair Growth Challenge!

Yes, I'm taking allladis with me!
It's Monday morning. By all accounts, I should be packing for my trip to Jamaica. My flight leaves tonight. But this is a laptop and iPad free trip, so I had to make sure I hipped you guys to what I'm doing before I jetted off.

Since my curly cut at Be Kekoa, I've re-committed myself to my tag line (healthy hair via healthy body, for those of y'all that ain't know lol). Thanks to #30DaysofDope, I have the fitness and healthy eating (ish) part of that down. And because I've been down this road before, I know exactly what to do with my hair. I just need to be more intentional about it.

Teaming up with Rapunzel the Future of Hair couldn't have come at a better time for me. Post cut, my hair is at the healthiest that it's been in years, literally. My goal is to maintain the health and integrity of my hair, while promoting growth and fullness. I've already reviewed their Hair Lotion and Hair Silk (spoiler alert: loved them!), so the HairTherapy Multivitamins and Protein Deep Conditioner are welcome additions to my healthy hair routine.

Rapunzel's Hair Lotion at work!
When it comes to the Rapunzel Hair Growth Challenge, I'll be doing more than sharing progress pictures. Vitamins and supplements (especially ones with more than just biotin or MSM) can impact the health of your skin, energy levels, and more. I'll be sharing my experience as it relates to not only hair growth, but what else Rapunzel HairTherapy does for (or to) my body. I want to give you guys a complete picture, so you can make informed decisions about whether the Rapunzel HairTherapy vitamin is right for you.

Vitamin nutritionals.
And just to be sure that I'm going about this the right way now , I will:

And just to be sure that I'm not going about this the wrong way, I will not:
  • Do a whole bunch of protective styling. It's not my steez. Plus, I don't want to start doing stuff with my hair that I don't do regularly anyway.
  • Take all of the other vitamins that I normally take. After comparing the label of Rapunzel HairTherapy (their vitamin is way more thorough than I thought), I'm not going to be taking my multivitamin, MSM, B-Complex, Vitamin C, or D-3. I'll only be taking my Amazing Grass Wheatgrass, Black Currant Oil, Neocell Joint Bursts (gotta keep these joints healthy while lifting heavy) and Calcium, Mercola Krill Oil, with the HairTherapy Multivitamins.
  • Clip and trim my ends like crazy. I literally just got my hair cut, so I should be good for the next 3 months if I'm caring for it like I should.
For the challenge, I've decided that measuring my hair with measuring tape is a lot more accurate than wearing a tee-shirt and pulling random curls down. Plus, trying to mimic the same angle month after month is a pain. So I've decided that at the top of each month, I'll be measuring three specific areas of my hair - in the back, over my ear, and front and center. My hair grows somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch per month. So let's see where Rapunzel gets me!

Here are my hair measurements, starting August 1st, 2016 (today):

Started...
Over Left Ear: 8 and 3/4 inches
Back Left: 11 inches
Front and Center: 9 inches

I can't wait to check in with you guys on September 1st! If you're gonna grow with me, drop me a line in the comments below!

My curls yesterday. Moisturized with Rapunzel Hair Lotion.

Again, this post is not a substitute for the advice and expertise of a licensed healthcare professional. As with any supplement, check with your doctor first. Per the FTC, I have to let y'all know that this post is sponsored by Rapunzel the Future of Hair. But that doesn't mean anything - I'm still keeping it 100 and giving you guys the real.

Review: Miche LUSH Deep Conditioner and POLISHED Hair & Scalp Oil
Comb: Eternally in Amber (because folks always ask!)

Y'all, I'm hype right now - for a few different reasons.

One, my product junkie-ism is in full swing - I'm getting to play in new products, experience new brands, and share them all with you guys. Two, the vast majority of the brands I'm experiencing are Black owned, and it feels good.

For those of you guys who have been following me for a while, then you know I've been on the small and Black Owned business tip for a few years now. And I'm glad that as a solution-oriented measure, the conversation and action is picking up steam. I've finally organized my product reviews in a way that'll be helpful for you guys looking to support Black Owned brands and businesses - under the "Reviews" section, the first option in the dropdown box is Black Owned. Here is where you'll find all things Black business related. Reviews, features, write-ups, op-eds, and more. This feature works best via desktop/tablet, but you'll still get some value out of it on mobile too.

And that's where Miche (prounounced mee-sh) comes in. Miche is actually the brand new product line and brainchild of one of my fav YouTubers Michelle B.//Everything Mich. I love Michelle's channel because she's genuine, honest, and I feel like we have similar-ish textures. Plus, she doesn't come across as stank - which I love. I don't support stank - on the internet or in real life, #ijs.

After Michelle launched her line, I reached out to her for a collaboration/review - and that's where I found out we both are fans of each other's content. Lesson - you never know who's watching you!

And here we are now - I'm about to give you the goods on LUSH Deep Conditioner with Raw Honey & Babassu Oil and POLISHED Hair & Scalp Oil with Argan & Jojoba Oils.

Active Ingredients
  • Water
  • Aloe Leaf JuiceActs as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine.
  • Castor Seed Oil: Thick, highly viscous oil with antibacterial, antifungal, and humectant properties. It is also a great moisture sealant, and promotes hair thickening and growth.
  • Babassu Seed Oil: Oil pressed from the kernel of the Brazilian Orbigynya Palm Tree, with a similar chemical composition to coconut oil. It is able to penetrate the hair (to a degree), improving moisture, strength, elasticity, softness, and shine of hair. It is a wonderful alternative for those who want the benefits of coconut oil, but don't care for it in the hair.
  • Olive Oil: Olive Oil is rich in high levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which is good for hair growth. Both mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E are good for moisturizing, protecting and nourishing hair. Olive oil makes hair grow stronger and its emollient properties prevent hair loss.

Review: Miche LUSH Deep Conditioner and POLISHED Hair & Scalp Oil
Thicky thick!

The Good
Geez, where do I begin?! I'm in love with LUSH. From the moment I opened the jar, I knew I had something special. First of all, I have a special place in my heart for great branding, packaging, and labels that don't wear off in the shower. So there's that. And then, there's the fragrance. It's delightful. Something like a watermelon jolly rancher or blow pop. It just takes me back to a simpler time - where my biggest concerns were making sure I was on the right side of the double dutch ropes to jump in, and avoiding "scratchies" while playing handball. It's sweet, fruity, nostalgic, and not at all overbearing.

But what y'all really wanna know is, how does it work? Let me just say this - like magic. As you can see in the pic above, LUSH is super thick, creamy, and well, lush. It has a richness to it that made me an immediate fan. Despite its thickness, it soaked right into my hair, and made detangling a breeze. Yes, LUSH has amazing slip. I've used it as a quick deep conditioner (5-10 minutes), and also for the recommended 30-45. It doesn't matter what length of time I choose - LUSH always performs. After rinsing, my hair has that buttery smooveness that I crave in a deep conditioner (yasssssss!), tons of shine, and is super moisturized. Needless to say, the first jar is almost gone. It's that real.

The Bad
While I always skew toward more natural fragrances (via essential oils and such), I really didn't mind the scent in LUSH. As mentioned previously, it takes me back to my childhood every time I open the jar. As far as LUSH is concerned, there's only two problems with it. One, I can't get it anywhere on the ground yet. And two, I need a 16oz jar. But I'm holding out hope. Because if Soultanicals, Obia, Mielle, TGIN, Alikay, and The Mane Choice can make it to major retailers, there's no reason Miche can't, either!

The Bottom Line
Miche's LUSH Deep Conditioner is the dry hair plug. Seriously. With the LA summer weather ranging from dry and crispy to breezy and tolerable, I'm relying heavily on LUSH to keep my tresses deeply hydrated and nourished. I absolutely love the ingredients, and I feel like Michelle definitely hit all the important markers for a moisturizing, detangling deep conditioner. If you're in the market for a deep conditioner that does what it says it's going to do - then definitely check out LUSH!

Would I Buy it Again?
I didn't buy the first one, but that don't mean squat! I'd absolutely buy this deep conditioner with my own money. I'm in a different sort of space with my natural hair - one where I'll shell out the dough necessary to keep it poppin'. That doesn't mean I'm spending fifty-leven dollars on magical curly potion pudding souffle gel custard #8. It means that if the product is under $20 and works, chances are it's coming home with me. The caveat to this is, the ingredient composition has to justify the price point. I'm not paying $19 for a product full of corn oil (not naming any names), but I'll come out of pocket for ingredients that work, ya know?

Review: Miche LUSH Deep Conditioner and POLISHED Hair & Scalp Oil
Hair shine courtesy of POLISHED!
The Good
Full transparency here - oils don't typically get me all in a tizzy, with the exception of a few that border on the miraculous, I'm a straight and narrow kinda gal when it comes to oils. Coconut oil in the warmer months, argan oil in the cold times. And when it comes to sealing my hair and ends, I forget to do it about 90% of the time. But even with all that said, I really like POLISHED. I think my oil-loving naturalistas will dig the consistency - its lightweight and packs a punch without being super greasy. It borders on serum-esque without the silicones. In fact, when I use POLISHED to seal, the end result is always super hand-in-hair syndrome, because my strands feel so silky smooth.

I also appreciate the versatility of POLISHED - it works as a scalp oil, hair and ends oil, and hot oil treatment. I'm not much for hot oil treatments, but I did use it on my scalp and to seal my hair (when I remembered lol), and I was impressed. Especially for relieving scalp itchy realness. It added great shine and soothed my psoriasis-prone scalp without making my hair all soul-glo-esque. One last note on the fragrance of the oil - Michelle, thank you. I don't know if other folks know this, but a lot of oils actually stink. Not rancid, but not pleasant, either. Thank you for finding the perfect balance of fragance without being overbearing.

The Bad
To be completely honest, I'm not a fan of soybean oil. It has lots of nutritive properties, but it's just not something I'm personally a huge fan of. Even though POLISHED works great as-is, I'm curious as to what a formulation without soybean oil would look like. Would it alter the consistency or effectiveness? Just me being curious. It's not a dealbreaker by any means, just a preference thing.

The Bottom Line
If you've got itchy scalp, or your strands lack luster, POLISHED is a great way to get the 2-in-1 benefits from one product. It smells great, has great ingredients, and doesn't weigh hair down and make it feel greasy or oily. When my next batch of henna arrives, I'll definitely be adding some POLISHED to the mix for lightweight moisture and shine!

Would I Buy it Again?
It depends. Not because POLISHED is a bad product - I'm really just waiting to see what Miche is going to release next, so I can throw my coins their way. Keeping my fingers crossed for a gel. And a protein treatment. Because I love protein. And because, wash and go's. I know, I know. #productjunkieproblems. Gotta prioritize and budget.

Be Kekoa Tamanu and Cocomanu Oils - What's the Difference?
Two of the most AMAZING oils I've ever used.
It's no secret around these parts, I'm a huge fan of Be Kekoa. Not only as a brand, but as a salon. Brandie and her team are super dope, and if this isn't your first time on my blog, then you already know who Bae is.

Be Kekoa Bae Clean Review
Be Kekoa Be Moist Review

Since the trip we took to Tahiti in December, Be Kekoa has exclusively launched two oils in collaboration with local farmers in Huahine and across the islands of Polynesia. But this wasn't your regular ol' westernized smash n' grab for resources - that's not how Be Kekoa gets down. Bringing these oils to market was nothing short of a case study in ethics, fair trade, sustainable sourcing, and economic empowerment from the ground up.

Needless to say, I'm super proud of Brandie and the Be Kekoa team for setting out to change lives. To do good. In a society where big brands pillage indigenous cultures for natural resources (see: Africa, and pretty much ever other corner of the globe with people of color), I take comfort in knowing that there are still people and brands that stand for something. That that believe in the greater good. That put people before profit margins.

We'll talk more about the ethics behind beauty brands (because that's a conversation worth having) soon. In this post, I want to share with you all my experience with Be Kekoa's Tamanu Oil, and their newly released Cocomanu Oil. They're both amazing in their own right - but I wanted to highlight some key differences between the two that will help you decide if one (or both!) is right for your particular hair and skin concern.

Be Kekoa Tamanu and Cocomanu Oils - What's the Difference?
Bags, yes. Discoloration, no. #winning
Be Kekoa Tamanu Oil

Ingredients
  • 100% Pure Tamanu Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil (for fragrance)
Manufacturing & Extraction Process
Harvested, pressed, and crafted by hand in Huahine, French Polynesia. Bottled in Temecula, California.

Color and Consistency:
Deep amber, with a viscosity similar to Jamaican Black Castor oil, but not quite as thick.

Be Kekoa Tamanu and Cocomanu Oils - What's the Difference?
Tamanu Oil, up close and personal.
Nutrient Profile & Key Benefits
Tamanu Oil is naturally rich in Vitamins A and E, and anti-inflammatory Omegas 3, 6, and 9. It heals and promotes healthy hair and skin with a combination of anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Because Be Kekoa Tamanu Oil is handcrafted and cured in the sun (not zapped by machines) and free of pesticides, it retains all of it's nutritive properties. When looking for an oil for your hair and skin, you want to pay attention to its composition (pure is best), the method of extraction (cold or natural for optimum retention of nutrients), and free of pesticides (because industrial refinement to eliminate pesticides robs the oil of its nutritive benefits).

Best For
  • Stimulating and encouraging growth/regrowth of thinning or balding areas (Ghana Goddess used the oil to regrow her edges, y'all!)
  • Adding natural luster and intense moisture to dry, brittle, and damaged hair
  • Providing healing relief for skin and scalp conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis
  • Treating blemishes, breakouts, burns, insect bites, and stretch marks
  • Reversing the signs of aging and damage in both hair and skin
  • Nighttime skin protection and restoration
  • Treating skin discoloration
How I Use It
You've already seen Be Kekoa Tamanu Oil in action during the Great Oregano Mishap of 2016. Be Kekoa Tamanu Oil has been nothing short of amazing on both  my hair and skin. Even though I've clearly got bags under my eyes (#teamneedmoresleep), I don't have the crazy discoloration I normally would because I apply a few drops of Tamanu under my eyes right before bed. Tip: don't rub your eyes. I've also use Be Kekoa Tamanu Oil on insect bites, and to spot treat itchy areas of my scalp. Back in December, I used Be Kekoa Tamanu Oil to re-grow a spot  on my scalp that went bald (no lie), but I can't find the pictures. But when I do, I'll update this post. It was completely regrown within a few weeks.

Be Kekoa Cocomanu Oil

Ingredients
  • 100% Pure Tamanu Oil
  • Coconut Milk
Manufacturing Process
Harvested, pressed, and crafted by hand in Huahine, French Polynesia. Bottled in Temecula, California.

Color and Consistency
Light yellow with a consistency similar to sweet almond or coconut oil.

Be Kekoa Tamanu and Cocomanu Oils - What's the Difference?
Cocomanu Oil, up close and personal.
Nutrient Profile & Key Benefits
I like to think of Cocomanu Oil as the best of both worlds. It combines the nutrient richness of Tamanu Oil (Vitamins A and E, plus Omegas 3, 6, and 9) with the powerhouse realness of coconut milk, delivering an intense dose of Vitamins B1, B3, B5, B6, C, and E. Cocomanu also contains selenium, iron, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. These vitamins and minerals combine to create a lightweight oil that deeply nourishes hair and skin without a greasy after-feel. Be Kekoa Cocomanu Oil has amazing penetrating power to nourish hair from the root, and treat skin deep underneath the surface.

Best For
  • Stimulating hair growth via nutrients that improve blood circulation and nourish hair at the roots
  • Calming Dry, itchy, flaky scalp
  • Reversing signs of aging and damage in hair and skin
  • Adding lightweight moisture and shine to dry, dull hair
  • Reducing shedding and breakage in natural and chemically treated hair
  • Daytime skincare protection and rejuvenation
How I Use It
Honestly, I've been trying to figure out how I've made it this far in life without Cocomanu. Because Tamanu Oil is so potent and rich, I use it to spot treat. But with Cocomanu, I'm all over the place. I use it for scalp massages, as a hair serum for natural shine, and as a daily facial moisturizer to help keep my psoriasis at bay. I love how lightweight and versatile it is! With Cocomanu, I'm on my #OperationForeverYoung skincare grind forreal.

Two things to remember about Be Kekoa Tamanu and Cocomanu Oil:
  1. Be Kekoa Tamanu Oil is the only Tamanu Oil on the market made with the Mana and blessing of the people of Huahine (I saw this literally, with my own two eyeballs)
  2. Be Kekoa Cocomanu is also made with the Mana and blessing of the people of Huahine. It is also the only Coconut Milk-Tamanu Oil blend on the market, period.

Natural Hair Products from the 6ix: Up North Naturals Review
Yea, yea, up and away...
I'm just going to let you know right now, I listen to a lot of Drake. Probably more than I should, and definitely more than I should admit to.

I apologize in advance.

When it comes to natural hair, there's only one thing that excites me more than a dope 3rd day wash and go: new hair products. So when Lisa from Up North Naturals slid in my DM's on Instagram, I was immediately hooked. I stalked that package from the time it left Canda until it arrived on my doorstep. The day it arrived, I played in them ALL.

At that moment, I knew it was love. 0 to 100 real quick.

Before I get all mushy and gushy, let me drop a lil' background on Up North Naturals. The Up North Naturals product line is the brainchild and founder of Lisa Keizer, and is made in T-Dot aka the 6ix aka Toronto. The line is 6 products deep, and consists of the Clean Curls Shampoo, TLC Replenishing Conditioner, Go-2 Hydrating Hair Milk, 8-Oil Defining Gelly, Twist & Curl Butter, and 8-Oil Blend. All of the products are made with 100% natural ingredients, have no artificial colors or fragrances, and are paraben, silicone, and cruelty-free. Today, we're going to be talking about the 4 products Lisa sent me - Clean Curls, Go-2 Hydrating Hair Milk, 8-Oil Defining Gelly, and the 8-Oil Blend.

Let's dive right in:
Note: There are two more products in the Up North Naturals line - the TLC Curl Replenishing Conditioner and Twist & Curl Butter. I was able to experience those products late last year the first time I tried Up North Naturals. Unfortunately, this time around they weren't in stock (a testament to how good they are). I still got pictures tho! Lol. Continue on...

After Clean Curls. No Conditioner yet!
The Good
Generally speaking, shampoos don't impress me. So when I say this, believe every word: Clean Curls is now one of my favorite shampoos of all time. ALL TIME. Yes, it's up there with Be Kekoa Be Clair, TGIN Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo, and Ouidad Superfruit Renewal Clarifying Cream Shampoo. As a matter of fact, Clean Curls made such a huge impression on me that it ousted Ouidad in the Christina's Choice 2015 shampoos and cleansers category. It has a fresh, citrus fragrance (from the essential oil blend) that smells bright and refreshing, but isn't overbearing. It doesn't have the thick consistency of the other shampoos, but I don't mind. The liquidy-ness (yes, liquidy-ness) of the shampoo makes it super easy to put in an applicator bottle and apply directly to the scalp. Oh, and the biggest bonus here? You can detangle with it. You know that's where shampoos win me over. Clean Curls has more slip than some co-washes I've tried over the years, and I'm not kidding. It has a nice lather, and cleans curls without stripping them -- but who cares? Did I mention the SLIP?!

The Bad
The only thing wrong with Clean Curls is that it has to come allllll the way from Canada. But who am I kidding? I'll cancel a flight back home...and stay another day for it! (I warned y'all about the levels of champagnepapi in this post)

The Bottom Line
Christina's Choice 2015 nominee. Up for another one this year too. You can't buy that honor with me - it's 100% based on performance and value. Nuff said.

Would I Buy it Again?
In a heartbeat.

Tryna turn great hair days into a lifestyle!
The Good
You my right hand, you're my go to! Ha - I wonder if that's where Lisa got the name for this product...because it's super clutch. I love a good leave-in, and Go-2 Hydrating Hair Milk does not disappoint. The consistency is true to that of a hair milk (most hair milks are actually closer to lotions, meaning they're thicker), but with Go-2 Hydrating Hair Milk, you get that liquidy action that makes it super spreadable. In fact, my hair soaks it right up. It has awesome slip and plays nicely with tons of products. The smell is of sweet, heavenly citrus and my absolute favorite thing about Go-2 Hydrating Hair Milk is how it makes my curls feel instantly smooth. Like on site.

The Bad
Because of the true milk consistency, it's easy to go overboard. Don't squeeze the bottle super hard, because the contents will gush out. This is not the kind of hair milk where you need the upper body strength of 10 Olympian lifters to get it out.

The Bottom Line
Go-2 Hydrating Hair Milk is a solid leave-in conditioner and hair moisturizer. It works great, soaks into the hair easily, and plays nicely with other products. If you're not here for super thick butter-esque lotions, definitely give this one a try!

Would I Buy it Again?
Yes. Because it works ah-MAY-zingly well with my absolute most favoritest product in the line....

That Gelly is MAGIC!
8-Oil Defining Gelly
Cost
$14.99 for 8oz

Where to Buy
www.upnorthnaturals.com

Active Ingredients
  • Aloe Vera Juice: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness.
  • Coconut Oil: Oil high in saturated fats (which is why when cold, it is solid). One of the few known oils to penetrate the hair shaft and truly moisturize hair. Coconut oil helps to moisturize, seal, and prevent breakage.
  • Avocado Oil: Omega 3-rich nourishing oil extract that can enhances shine, moisture retention, softness, and elasticity in hair.
  • Grapeseed Oil: Pressed oil from the seeds of grapes, high in Vitamin E and linoleic acid. It is an antioxidant, moisturizing, and nourishing oil.
  • Jojoba Oil: Oil closest in molecular weigh to the natural sebum produced by the scalp. It coats the hair shaft (its molecular structure prevents it from penetrating the cuticle) and aids in providing slip and protection.
The Good
There's a special, special place in my heart for 8-Oil Defining Gelly. And I'm not just saying that to be nice, either. It's the real deal controlla (hehe) for these crazy curls of mine.  It was love at first rake & shake. 8-Oil Defining Gelly has kept my curls poppin' in a way that comes eerily close to Obia Naturals Curl Enhancing Custard. As in, I can easily swap one for the other and have an AMAZING hair day. And y'all know how I feel about Curl Enhancing Custard.

Natural Hair Products from the 6ix: Up North Naturals Review
#textureshot of Go-2 Hydrating Hair Milk + 8-Oil Gelly
8-Oil Defining Gelly has a couple of thangs working for it that knock my socks off. One, you guys already know by now that I LOVE me some heavy gel. Light gels and curl creams just don't pack the same punch. And with as disrespectful as my hair is (especially in the crown), only a thick, heavy gel will do. But here's the caveat - I need the thick, heavy gel to not leave me on ramen noodle status for 4 days. I need my curls to dry super defined, and naturally expand over the course of the next 3-5 days. I'm not one to get all extra'd out with my hair - I don't fluff, ruffle with a diffuser, or pick my curls to the brink of extinction just for volume and a good photo op. And 8-Oil Defining Gelly definitely hits all the marks there. My curls are defined and awesome, and open up without manipulation over the next few days.

By the way - if you wanted to know the secret to a wash and go that lasts for several days and doesn't result in a tangled bird's nest of dry curls, that's it right there. Just re-read the last paragraph :)

The Bad
The only bad thing I have to say about 8-Oil Defining Gelly? It doesn't come in a lifetime supply jar. I need Up North Naturals to quit playin' and put this stuff in the Eco-sized vat with the plastic handle.

Natural Hair Products from the 6ix: Up North Naturals Review
Baby, I like your style...
The Bottom Line
Needless to say, 8-Oil Defining Gelly is super moisturizing, ultra creamy gel that defines and moisturizes with the best of them. Although it does leave a slight cast, it's not the uber crispy type. It's a soft cast that will leave you with serious hair-in-hand-syndrome. And it smells heavenly.

Would I Buy it Again?
Hahahahaha that's not a question for me, is it?! You already know my answer. The real question is, have you ordered yours yet, or nah?

8-Oil Blend
Cost
$14.99 for 4oz

Where to Buy

Active Ingredients
  • Neem Oil: Ayurvedic oil that enhances shine and hair health, while providing naturally antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Great for helping relieve itchy, dry scalp, dandruff, eczema, and more.
  • Jojoba Oil: Oil closest in molecular weigh to the natural sebum produced by the scalp. It coats the hair shaft (its molecular structure prevents it from penetrating the cuticle) and aids in providing slip and protection.
The Good
You guys know I'm not super wild crazy passionate about oils like I am, say...curl definers. Oils don't get me hype unless they're truly something special. With that said, the 8-Oil Blend is a really good oil. I love the spa-esque herbal fragrance, the oils that it's made from (especially that neem and avocado!), and how it feels on my hair and scalp. It's not super oily, and works great to combat dry scalp. It works great as a pre-poo, sealant, shine boosting serum, and scalp massage oil. I especially love the use of essential oils to naturally fragrance the blend.

Natural Hair Products from the 6ix: Up North Naturals Review
My old flex is my new flex now and we're workin' on it. (I just wanted to say that lol)
The Bad
The only down side to the oil is the size. I know a lot of oils can be expensive (especially jojoba, avocado, and neem) - so I understand the bottle sizing. Other than that, I've got nothing.

The Bottom Line
Real talk - this is one of the few oils I have that actually stops itchy scalp. For that alone, I rocks with it. I can't wait until my next henna shipment arrives - it's about to be on and curl poppington!

Would I Buy it Again?
Absolutely. I'm glad I have a second bottle, because the first one is almost out! #justsaying

Moisture for Days! curLUXE Naturals Review

I'm about to do my most favorite thing EVER in this blog post. Yeah, we're gonna talk ingredients. Absolutely there's a video in case you wanna hear me ramble on for about 14 minutes.

But the highlight of this post?

Putting you up on game.

I love being able to share products that I feel are like, best kept secrets. That everybody and they momma should know about, but doesn't. And curLUXE Naturals fits that billing to a tee. Because there's so much competition in the natural hair space (which is a beautiful thing for us on the consumer end, cause options), new and emerging brands have got to have more going for them than a miracle butter and crazy wild hair growth oil. No matter the size or scale of your brand, I want to see your passion and vision come through in what you bring to the table.

And curLUXE Naturals did that - in more ways than one. It's pretty fair to say I'm obsessed. Let me break down why I'm riding with curlLUXE Naturals for the long haul. Chances are, by the end of this review you will be, too.

As mentioned previously, there's a video that accompanies this post - #productchatter style. Check it out while you read (or after...or before...whatevs!):

Active Ingredients
  • Aloe Vera Leaf Juice: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness.
  • Hydrolyzed Keratin: Protein that is responsible for keeping the hair strong and pliable. This is the strongest of the(hair product) proteins and is actually the one that hair is made from. Keratin restructures hair that has been damaged or broken down by chemicals. It helps to replace the amino acid cysteine (the main one lost during chemical processing). When Keratin or any protein is hydrolyzed, the molecules have been broken down and are small enough to go beyond the cuticle and penetrate the hair shaft. It will strengthen all 3 layers of the hair.
  • MSM: MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur found in many foods. Mainly known for joint health and inflammation, MSM has some promising effects on hair growth. Not only is sulfur a building block for your hair, it also has been shown to lengthen the growing phase of hair.
  • Rosemary Extract: Known growth stimulant and extract, used to prevent dandruff and even premature baldness, as well as enhance highlights. The leaves are known to have relatively high levels of antioxidants.
  • Peppermint Leaf Extract: Stimulates follicles and promotes hair growth.

The Good
Ummm, everything. No, but seriously. Dew Luxe was the first product of the four that I tried, and I knew from the second I slid the nozzle into "unlock", I was in for a treat. This ain't ya average refresher spray, by any stretch. Although it can be used as a hair and scalp refresher, I tend to use it almost exclusively as the later. Why? Two reasons. One, it's AMAZING on the scalp. And two, the other products from curLUXE Naturals are so moisturizing, you don't even need a hair refresher. Seriously.

Moisture for Days! curLUXE Naturals Review

For me, Dew Luxe is a GAME CHANGER. Like, you know that cool tingly feeling you get on your scalp as you cleanse with Bae Clean, or deep condition with Mielle or Rapunzel? Imagine that, two days later when it's hot as satan's chambers outside. That's what Dew Luxe delivers. It's like a cool shot button for the scalp. If I were a protective styling type of gal, I would HAVE to have this in my arsenal for scalp maintenance. And the ingredient list that supports scalp and hair health is off the charts! Those active ingredients are just the tip of the iceberg. We're talking yucca, horsetail, bamboo, amla, biotin, and more.

The Bad
Seriously, there is no down side to Dew Luxe. Like, I tried hard to think about it - and curLUXE Naturals got it down - right down to the type of trigger spray nozzle (instead of that blasted other type that's a disaster for wet or oily hands).

The Bottom Line
Liquid GOLD. Enough said.

Would I Buy it Again?
My re-up game with curLUXE Naturals in general is about to be SKRONG.

  • Aloe Vera Leaf Juice: Acts as a natural conditioning agent that restores the hair's sheen, luster, and shine. It not only makes the hair soft, but it also enhances strength and suppleness.
  • Glycine Soja Oil: Carrier oil used to lubricate and nourish the hair, providing softness and shine.
  • Olive Fruit Oil: Olive Oil is rich in high levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which is good for hair growth. • Behentrimonium Methosufate: gentle surfactant made from non-GMO rapeseed (canola oil), and is one of the mildest detangling ingredients out there. It doesn't cause buildup or irritation to the scalp.

The Good
Remember what I said a few minutes ago about moisture? Yep. With curLUXE Naturals, it starts on wash day. Forreals. the Manuka Honey & Avocado Conditioning Nectar is a thick peice of magic goodness that intensely moisturizes my hair and makes it feel like BUTTAH! Which is crazy, because you only leave it in for 5 minutes. In the video, I called Manuka Honey & Avocado a "fast-acting deep conditioner" and I meant every word of it. For those of y'all wondering what that means, it means that the conditioner has the properties and performs like a deep conditioner, without having to spend an eternity with it in your hair. 5 minutes, and I'm out.

What's even cooler about Manuka Honey & Avocado is that it can be used as a leave-in as well. But, with the next product I'm gonna discuss, you don't even need it.

The Bad
The only drawback for me which isn't even really a drawback, is the absence of protein. I'm a protein junkie when it comes to my hair. But considering the number of products I use that don't contain protein, I think having at least one that's purely moisturizing is beneficial.

The Bottom Line
Crazy moisture. Like, off the charts. A must-have for chronically dry hair.

Would I Buy it Again?
To be honest, I'm on the fence with this one. It's a DOPE deep conditioner. But I luh protein. I don't know. It's amazing. But I kinda wanna just invest in a lifetime supply of Cashmere Curl Parfait, Dew Luxe, and White Tea Sleek Edge Control. Decisions, decisions.

But I'm a product junkie, so yes.

The Good
Truth telling time - the first active ingredient listed here should be MAGIC. Y'all, I'm OBSESSED with this stuff. Like, it's a magical jar of moisturizing goodness. If there was a buttercream hall of fame, Cashmere Curl Parfait would be in it. If you watch the video, you'll see exactly what I mean. I've made a DEEEEEP dent in Cashmere Curl Parfait - a true testament to its power. It's thick. It's creamy. It INTENSELY moisturizes - for days on end. It produces amazing shine, and that touchable smoothness that makes you have serious hand-in-hair syndrome. If you get a chance to watch the video, you'll see me go on and on about Cashmere Curl Parfait. It's so good, that my friend +Antoinette Arrington wants to change her kid's name to Cashmere.

Watch the video. I'm not kidding!

The Bad
The only downside to any product that steals my heart? The container is never big enough. I need an every-other-month mail order of Cashmere Curl Parfait, or something. I don't ever wanna be without it.

The Bottom Line
It plays nicely with my favorite curl definers. It's so moisturizing, I don't need a leave-in or dual leave-in, or LOC, or LCO - none of that. Cashmere Curl Parfait + wet hair + Obia's Custard = a good hair day every single time.

Would I Buy it Again?
Y'all thought I was playing about a mail order supply, huh?

Active Ingredients
  • Aqueous Botanical Infusion: Riboos, White Tea, Green Tea: Water infusion with these three teas provides a beneficial boost of natural antioxidants, proven DHT blockers (one of the main causes of hair loss), antibiotics, and stimulation of blood circulation to hair follicles, all which promote hair growth.
  • Ceteareth-20: Emulsifier derived from fatty alcohols, used primarily to mix oil/water/alcohols, and help evenly disperse ingredients in a product
  • Glyceryl Cocoate: Polymer derived from polyethylene glycol and coconut oil fatty acid, used as a conditioning agent, emulsifier, emollient, and surfactant.
  • Hydrogenated Castor Oil: Polyethylene glycol derivatives of castor oil used to help form emulsions by reducing the surface tension of ingredients, also acts as a solvent to help ingredients mix that normally would not.
  • Polyquaternium-7: Polymeric quaternary ammonium salt used as an antistatic agent and hair fixative (for hold).
  • Broccoli Seed Oil: Oil extracted from the seeds of broccoli, rich in Vitamins A, C, B6 that promotes growth, slows hair loss (naturally contains a DHT blocker), and strengthens the follicles. Also contains a unique fatty acid composition that delivers intense shine, similar to that of a silicone - naturally.
  • MSM: MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur found in many foods. Mainly known for joint health and inflammation, MSM has some promising effects on hair growth. Not only is sulfur a building block for your hair, it also has been shown to lengthen the growing phase of hair.

I think? Is edge control in general a CG thing? Lol.

The Good
My favorite edge control used to be the Eden's BodyWorks Coconut Shea Control Edge glaze. But one thing I could never jive with was the white buildup after 2-3 days of continuous use. Thanks to White Tea Sleek Edge Control, I no longer have to worry about that.

Not only do the ingredients make my heart (and my baby hairs) sing, but with this edge control I've got the perfect balance. Great shine, great hold - a very natural looking hold at that, and all without managing to look like Jermaine Jackson (watch the video at 11:23 for the visuals). What's even better is that I can literally use White Tea Sleek Edge Control every day - without white clumpy buildup.

The Bad
The only downside is that White Tea Sleek Edge Control is pricier than my former fave.

The Bottom Line
Yes, edges! Flourishing and flat at the same time? My new go-to favorite edge control. As a matter of fact, yesterday I had a little sitch that I shared on Snapstagram and Snapchat (both maneobjective), where I tried to give myself two cornrows and it was a DISASTER. Luckily, Antoinette (yes, "Change My Kid's Name to Cashmere" Antoinette came through and blessed my tresses with two neat braids and baby hairs slicked. Tools used? Eternally in Amber rainbow comb, brush, and curLUXE Naturals White Tea Sleek Edge Control! And of course, I put Dew Luxe on my scalp.

New Cycle of #30DaysofDope Launching September 1st, 2016!
www.30daysofdope.com
Hey peeps!

I got some pretty darn good feedback from you all about #30DaysofDope - and most of it revolved around the fact that it seems like it came out of nowhere, and that you guys wish you had more time to get on board.

I hear you - loud and clear! In fact, that was one of the main critiques I had myself. Two days is not enough time to prepare for much of anything - not to mention, preparing to be your best. So this time around, I'm going to make sure we (not just you, but me too!) have ample time to get things situated so we can commit to pure, unadulterated dopeness for 30 days. Let's just consider the last round a beta test :)

With that being said, I'm OFFICIALLY launching #30DaysofDope on Thursday, September 1st 2016. That's right. September is about to be off the CHAIN! I'm tweaking #30DaysofDope from the last time around, but the idea is the same - pushing the boundaries of personal excellence. Committing to being the best version of you for 30 days.

Here are the three areas we'll be focusing on starting September 1st:
  • Mind
  • Body
  • Spirit
This time around, I'm streamlining things. The more concise the goal, the clearer the path to achieving it becomes. So we're keeping it simple, and keeping it dope. Get ready:

Dope Mind
September is all about personal growth and perspective. And rather than be guided by some ambiguous notions of betterness doing, I've decided to get concrete with it. To get intentional. Because at the end of the day, the greatest barriers to our success lies within the mind. To lay the mental landscape for success, I'm enlisting the help of a book that I loved but need to read again - The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. You don't have to read this book with me, but if you did, that would be pretty darn dope. Why? Because the agreements in the book are pretty much the blueprint for dopeness:
  1. Be impeccable with your word
  2. Don't take anything personally
  3. Don't make assumptions
  4. Always do your best.
That's a word right there!

I purchased my copy years ago from Google Play Books (back in my Samsung Galaxy Note days) and luckily, theres an iOS app for that so I'm good to go. But just in case you need a copy here are some links:

If you're a better listener than I am, Audible has a free 30 day trial and you can get the book here: http://www.audible.com/pd/Self-Development/The-Four-Agreements-Audiobook/B002VA3GJO

For Kindle download or to order a physical copy for under $7, here it is on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2aXuvka

Make sure you're on the e-mail list for this one (www.30daysofdope.com and drop your info in the popup box) because each week, I'll be chatting with all my dope folks about some major takeaways from the book. Even if you can't join me in reading this time around, you'll still be able to get some gems and join in on the conversation about practically applying the reading.

Dope Body
Confessions time: I can no longer ignore the correlation between what I put in my body and how it functions. During the July #30DaysofDope trial run, I noticed that when I ate better, I felt better. And when I kept a close eye on what I put in my body, it showed on the outside. For September, I've got a plan of attack. I've enlisted the help of my friend Kohran by way of supporting him in his new business - A-1 Lifestyle. I paid Kohran (because you don't always ask your peeps for freebies when they're tryna run a business) to create a custom meal plan for me. The results were very thorough, and tailored to my specific food quirks and preferences. And if you caught me on snap this past Sunday and Thursday, then you saw a little bit of my meal prep go down. As we get a little closer to launch, I'll share my experience, a snippet of my own meal plan, and some results. But for now, click here to like his Facebook page. And if you're interested in a meal plan of your own, e-mail him at a1lifestyle247365[at]gmail.com.

New Cycle of #30DaysofDope Launching September 1st, 2016!
Just a lil' taste of meal prep, a la Christina Patrice
As far as workouts go, Samuel is in charge. It's literally his favorite hobby, so I'll be following his strength training and lifting recommendations. If you want to know what we're working on, definitely add me on MyFitnessPal (tinap17) which is where I update my workout diary. I'll also be adding workouts and info on Instagram @30daysofdope!

New Cycle of #30DaysofDope Launching September 1st, 2016!
This was 450. I'm at 500 now!
Dope Spirit
I may get some upper left clicks and unsubscribes for this, but I am Christian. I believe in God. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins and rose on the third day. I also believe that Jesus did not have blonde hair and blue eyes. With that being said, I'm not on a conversion crusade. Your belief system is your belief system. And if you'd like to know more about my personal journey to accepting Christ, e-mail me at christina[at]30daysofdope.com and I'm more than happy to share (but if you came to argue, spare yourself... I won't reply). I say all of this to say, #30DaysofDope is not for you if you don't believe in something bigger than yourself. My personal focus for 2016 has been to live out Matthew 5:16, and I'll be continuing that path with daily Bible verse readings from YouVersion. I'm also reading the Before the Cross: Fruit of the Spirit devotional, because I believe it aligns perfectly with living out Matthew 5:16. It's only a 9 day devotional, but rather than rush through all 9 fruits of the spirit and on to the next, I want to marinate and reflect on each one for a few days. If you need some more context about the fruit of the spirit, check out Galatians 5:22-23.

We've covered a lot of ground, and I'm super excited about the path ahead. To get the official prep list breakdown for #30DaysofDope September 2016 click here or go to www.30daysofdope.com. Note: I'll also be e-mailing this prep list to my #30DaysofDope e-mail fam.

I'm super excited - can't wait for the 1st!

Why You Need Collagen Supplements for Healthy Hair, Skin, and Body!
My Neocell Bounty
Truth telling time: the second I turned 31, I started low-key freaking out about my skin. Not just about psoriasis and keeping it at bay (read more about that here), but capturing and maintaining a youthful glow, tightening pores, and reducing breakouts.

First, I went on a wild goose chase for Vitamin C serums. Them thangs are expensive and come in tiny, tiny bottles. Then, I started hearing whispers on the internet about collagen. So I sank my coins (not really, it wasn't that expensive lol) into a pack of Beauty Bursts from Vitamin Shoppe during their BOGO sale. They tasted great, and I made it through the 30 day supply with ease.

Then I forgot to re-up.

All hope was not lost - to my pleasant surprise, while going through my e-mail inbox (it's a jungle in there), I discovered an e-mail from Neocell, makers of the Beauty Bursts. After checking out their website, I realized there was a greater reason to collaborate. Between my vanity mission for healthy skin, and my #livelongandprosper mission with #30DaysofDope sat one particular product - Neocell's Collagen Sport Ultimate Recovery Complex protein powder.

Before I get into all the amazing ingredients and benefits, let's have a lil science lesson - shall we?

The Science of Collagen
First things first - collagen is a type of protein (more precisely, a long-chain amino acid) that naturally occurs in our bodies. Aside from water, collagen is one of the most plentiful resources available in our bodies - and acts as a building block for skin, tendons, hair, and bones.

Collagen is broken down into three different types - collagen 1, 2, and 3. Each type of collagen contains different proteins that serve different functions and for this reason, are paired differently for optimal absorption in the body.

Collagen Types 1 and 3
Collagen types 1 and 3 are often paired together, as they support skin, muscles, bone health, and hair and nail growth - thanks to the 19 amino acids present and their essential functions. Over 90% of the collagen in the body is contains types 1 and 3. The amino acids present in these collagen types help promote a healthy metabolism (study), stabilize collagen production in the body, and build protein within the body (hey muscles and hair!).

Collagen Type 2
Collagen type 2 helps restore the fluids and function in the cartilage and joints of the body. While types 1 and 3 are present throughout the body, collagen type 2 makes up 50-60% of the protein found in the joints. Taking a popular supplement for joints like glucosamine, chondroitin, or hyaluronic acid? Collagen type 2 has all of the above, and then some! Type 2 collagen is used best when taken in the evening or right before bed.

Why Take Collagen Supplements?
If our bodies produce collagen, why spend the money on collagen-based supplements like the ones offered by Neocell? The answer is simple - age. As we get older, our ability to produce collagen diminishes. That's why with age, our hair thins and becomes more brittle, wrinkles begin forming, skin thins and sags (yikes!), our metabolism slows, and the joints start creaking. Add in stress, poor diet, and hormonal imbalances - and we've got a real situation on our hands.

That's why I'm about that supplementing with Collagen life. Here are some of the benefits:

Benefits of Type 1 and 3 Collagen
  • Minimizes fine lines and wrinkles
  • Increases bone strength (36% of bone is made up of types 1 and 3)
  • Fixes weak and damaged nail bed
  • Thickens fine hair
  • Slows hair loss
  • Improves circulation
  • Increases glycine production which helps build lean muscle and burn fat during sleep
Benefits of Type 2 Collagen
  • Eases joint stiffness and pain
  • Reduces popping knees
  • Supports back, jaw, and joints
  • Reduces inflammation in the joints
  • Cushions and lubricates joints
  • Strengthens joints
So to sum things up, for that #foreveryoung skin and poppin' curls, supplement with types 1 and 3 collagen. To stay sprig, spry, and mobile, supplement with type 2 collagen.

Ok so...where exactly can I get this collagen stuff?

Glad you asked!

It just so happens (as mentioned in my intro), that I was already on the right track with Neocell Beauty Bursts. Beauty Bursts are actually a great source of collagen types 1 and 3. Click here to find where to purchase Beauty Bursts at a retailer near you.

For type 2 collagen, Neocell makes a pretty dope chew called Joint Bursts, that not only have type 2 collagen for joint support, but contain turmeric to help fight inflammation as well. I tried them for 30 days, and they served my joints well - helping me squat and lift without joint drama. Plus, they're pretty tasty (they give me sweet tropical vibes). Click here to find out where to grab Joint Burst chews near you!

Neocell Collagen Sport
But the real hero for me? Neocell's Collagen Sport Ultimate Recovery Complex. It's a protein powder with amazing nutritionals and amazing benefits. If you've been following my healthy living journey via #30DaysofDope and 30daysofdope.com, then you're no stranger to Neocell's Collagen Sport. I took it regularly during the July #30DaysofDope cycle, and loved it. It gave me energy and strength - and I made some serious strength gains! And if you read this post, then you know in preparation for the September 2016 Cycle, I've gotten even more laser-focused on my goals - to the point of getting a head start on following a dedicated nutrition plan and meal prep.

And let me tell you - Neocell Collagen Sport is 137% a part of that meal plan. I'm gonna share with you why in three quick parts:

Collagen Sport Profile
  • Macros: 30g protein, 2.25g carbohydrates, 0.5g fat, 0g sugar, and 123 calories per serving (those numbers are amazing - especially if you're looking to lose weight or get stronger!)
  • Gluten, sugar, lactose, and artificial flavor-free
  • Contains 15g of collagen types 1 and 3 (see 'The Science of Collagen' above for the benfits)
How I Use It
I use Neocell Collagen Sport two different ways:
  • As a plain shake with Califia Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk (I don't recommend this right out the gate if you don't regularly drink protein shakes...it's a steeeeep 'getting used to' curve)
  • As a part of a specialty drink (recommended). I either add it to a fruit smoothie with blueberries and acai, or use it to create a protein-infused caramel iced coffee (click here for the recipe).

Pros - Benefits I've Experienced
When taking Neocell Collagen Sport, a couple of things happen. One, I have amazing energy - without the jitters. It's a great morning or smoothie shake base, for this reason. It also keeps me full - thanks to the high amount of protein. As I mentioned a few paragraphs up, this stuff is no joke if you're looking to lose weight or build strength. In my case, I'm looking for both. Not only have I already hit my 2016 goal of squatting 200 (I'm at 205, and it's only August), I'm making strength strides in other areas - even running HIIT sprints and the stairmaster.

Oh and perhaps the biggest bomb of all - while incorporating Neocell Collagen Sport into my meal plan, I've dropped 7 pounds and 1.5 inches on my waist in a week (7 days). I expect the weight loss to slow and stabilize to something less drastic in the coming weeks, but just know those stats alone gave me tons of motivation to forge ahead. Let me know in the comments if you want a separate post on exactly what I did for those 7 days (hint: I didn't starve).

Cons/Drawbacks
Really, there's only two drawbacks that aren't really drawbacks when I think about it. First, the taste takes some getting used two - at least 2 to 3 shakes in. Not that it's nasty (y'all should already know I don't do nasty), but it's not super sweet. And coming from someone who was virtually addicted to sugar, transitioning to something that's only a fraction of the sweetness that you're used to can be difficult.

The second is that it can be somewhat tricky to locate Neocell Collagen Sport on the ground. They're only available in select Lassen and Whole Foods stores - but you can order via customer service - (800) 346-2922.

The Bottom Line
Neocell's Collagen Sport protein powder is an essential part of my meal plan and fitness goals for the September 2016 cycle of #30DaysofDope, and for the rest of 2016 to be honest. It's a super unique product with benefits that far surpass the other protein powders I've tried on the market. I highly recommend it - so far I've tried the French Vanilla flavor, but Belgian Chocolate is up next. Stay tuned to see what I make with those!

Rapunzel Hair Growth Challenge Update: Month 1
One month down, two to go!
I can't believe it's been a month already! August flew by like it was nobody's business. I'm super excited to share with you my experience using Rapunzel the Future of Hair HairTherapy vitamins!

I asked some of you guys on Facebook and Instagram if you had any specific questions you wanted answered about the vitamins - so let's get cracking. I'll start with my results, some general info, and then the questions you all asked.

Click here to see my starting hair measurements and why I'm doing this challenge.

Let's jump right in!

1 Month Results
As you guys know, measuring your hair growth for accuracy can be a pain in the butt. The last time I used a hair growth vitamin, I ended up making a shirt to track my progress. You can learn how to make your own shirt here, if you're interested. This time around, I opted for Rapunzel's own measuring tape spool, and I feel like I'm a better person for it. Plus, the results are more accurate (read more about my personal best practices for length checks here). With all that said, here are my results after using Rapunzel's HairTherapy vitamins for 1 month:

Rapunzel Hair Growth Challenge Update: Month 1
Measurements L to R correspond to the numbers below.
Starting measurements from August 1st, 2016:
Over Left Ear: 8 and 3/4 inches
Back Left: 11 inches
Front and Center: 9 inches

Current measurements from August 31st, 2016:
Over Left Ear: 9 and 3/4 inches
Back Left: 10 and 1/2 inches** (not counting those fray hairs that reach to 11)
Front and Center: 10 inches

Y'all know what that means right? In 30 days, I experienced a full INCH of hair growth! No shenanigans! For reference, my hair grows about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch per month. With Rapunzel HairTherapy vitamins, I'm a full inch in. That means by the end of October, I'm looking at an extra 3 inches of hair instead of the typical 1 and 1/2 to 2 and 1/4 inches! Yasssss!

**Now, on to this double askterisk business. You probably looked at that back left number like, how did you lose hair?! Here's the thing. About 3 weeks into my vitamin, I realized my hair wasn't quite right. Even though I had jussssst got a cut at Be Kekoa at the end of July, somehow my shape was not on point anymore. The culprit? The back half of my hair. See, the back half of my hair has a looser curl pattern and less shrinkage. This means that accelerated growth is more apparent - and is exactly why my cute curly shaped cut was looking less cute, and less shapely.

So I did what I thought made sense: I cut it. Yes, I took away between an inch and an inch and a half of hair along the back of my head. I even saved you guys some evidence:

Snip snip snip...
So if my math is correct (and I'll admit, sometimes it ain't), had I kept that inch and a quarter, I'd be looking at 12 and 1/2 inches along the back of my head. The final reason I went ahead and cut, was to give the front, more shrinkage-prone areas of my hair a "leg up" on the race to help maintain my shape for the long-term.

Hopefully it works...because I know these vitamins shole do!

Rapunzel HairTherapy Vitamin FAQ

Do the vitamins work?
Judging by the results I shared previously, I'm inclined to say yes. Although I'm only 30 days in, the results are there. I'll have a more definitive answer for ya come day 60.

What's in them?
Here's a snapshot of the ingredient list, proprietary blends included:

Rapunzel Hair Growth Challenge Update: Month 1
I make no claims to be a scientist.
Are they better than Mane Choice, Mielle Organics, or Hairfinity?
I can't tell ya. I've never taken Hairfinity, and I still have a half empty Mielle Organics vitamin in my collection (I took em on and off for two weeks a few months ago, nothing major to report there). I did take the first Mane Choice formula, but they've since released a plus that I have yet to try. At the end of next month, I'll do a definitive comparison - because I took Manetabolism vitamins for 2 months.

Do they cause breakouts?
Everyone's concern, right? The most annoying thing about vitamins is the potential to fix one problem while creating another. While biotin can cause breakouts, it can be curbed with the addition of zinc - which HairTherapy contains. In this first 30 days, my skin got no better or worse than it already was. I don't have perfect skin (Lord knows I need to order me some more Ashley's Naturals Pumpkin Mask and drink ACV every night), but I didn't notice any discernible changes in my skin.

Did they give you energy or keep you awake?
For reasons that I'll share a little down in y'alls questions, I switched to taking HairTherapy at night. The vitamins didn't keep me up at all (I really do be in bed by 10 lol), and I had no trouble getting to sleep after taking them. As far as daytime energy, I can't tell ya. But full disclosure - I do take a pre-workout (Cellucor C4) which contains caffeine, and probably lends itself to me having a lessened sensitivity to any energy-boosting components of HairTherapy.

Yassss to the shape filling in and growing out!
Y'alls Questions

Gas?
No, no extra poots on HairTherapy. Why did I even answer this? +Antoinette Arrington, I can't take you seriously. LOL.

How much are they? How many did you take? Any information about the company?
The vitamins are $24 for a 30 day supply (60 count). I take two per day, per the instructions on the label. Rapunzel the Future of Hair is a Black-owned business, founded by Rasheda Stewart in 2010. Rasheda launched Rapunzel the Future of Hair while pursuing her second Master's Degree in Marketing Management, after hitting a wall with her own hair growth. Like many with an entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to take matters into her own hands - creating a company focused on dispelling the myth that Black hair can't grow. And 6 years later, here we are. Growing hair and whatnot.

Did you increase your water intake?
Yes and no. I increased my water intake in general, as a part of my overall mission toward betterness doing and optimal health. And since #30DaysofDope is here, and I'm all on a meal plan - my beverage of choice (and by force) is water in various forms. Plain and cold. Bubbly with no sugar. Decaf. Lol. But to answer the question, I drink 60-80oz of water daily. I'm aiming for more, but hey.

Did you notice more overall thickness or fullness of fro, or actual growth?
I gotta admit, my hair is feeling fuller these days - reminding me of a young ManeObjective circa 2014. My hair may look "smaller" here than the back of the head view from the top of the month, but let me tell you. In that pic, my hair had been banded and pineappled for stretch and fluff realness (visual reference here). In the picture below, my hair is fresh out of the banana clip and scarf situation - with shrinkage in full effect. With that considered - not bad at all.

One last tidbit about fullness and density - I didn't notice any decreases in shedding with HairTherapy. Y'all...hair sheds. It's supposed to shed. It's a part of the growth cycle of hair. Circle of life and jazz. What freaks me (and most people out) is experiencing a decrease in shedding while taking a particular vitamin, stopping, and practically going bald. So while I feel like the density of my hair is on track for greatness, I'm confident that when I stop taking HairTherapy, life will go on without adverse impact.

Rear view.
Do they make you nauseous or sick?
Remember when I said I had a note on taking the vitamins at night? Let's clear that up. First of all, the vitamins themselves didn't make me nauseous or sick. On GP. However, I experienced something quite uncomfortable one day, when I took my vitamins and then immediately after, took my pre-workout powder. Don't ask me why I did it, sometimes I have lapses in judgment. Needless to say, the combination of the two sent my tummy into turmoil. Lesson learned. So now, I take HairTherapy at night, right before bed. This ensures that whatever pre-workout is out of my system, and I go to bed a happy camper.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't even eat a meal and drink pre-workout. Same sitch.

Do they make hair grow on other undesired areas?
You know what's funny about this? I expected my eyebrows to be a hot mess. To have hairy legs and pits. But as the good Lord saw fit, my hair everywhere else is growing at a normal rate. No twice a week visits to the eyebrow lady. I wish I could tell you guys definitively that my nails were growing - but I keep them cut short on purpose. Perhaps I'll do a gel mani this weekend to visually track that growth. Maybe.

Well guys, I hope I answered all your questions. Stay tuned for month 2!

The Good
Yall, Slumber Party is legit. It comes in a spray bottle, but I almost feel like it belongs in a regular screw lid bottle. It's creamy, velvety, and goes right into the hair. Jane Carter Solution really knocked it out the park with this one. Y'all know how I feel about leave-ins - they're vital to the outcome of the wash and go. Bad leave-in = bad hair day. Great leave in = great hair day. Truth be told, Slumber Party is everything I wanted Mielle's White Peony Leave-In to be. Rich, creamy, and truly provides that moisturizing canvas. Total winner in my book.

The Bad
I'm not a fan of anything in a spritz bottle that I have to use on wash day. Chances are, my hands are already wet, and covered in product residue - making it insanely difficult to grip and spray. I'd much rather this come with the standard press open or flip cap. Other than that, we're golden.

The Bottom Line
Amazing leave-in. Leaves hairs smooth and shiny without feeling greasy or weighing it down.

The Good
Linda. Listen, Linda. I said it in the video and I'll say it again - Frizz Free Styling Smoother is the product I didn't know I needed, but now I never wanna live without. Is it a leave-in, a cream, a curl definer? I don't know. But what I do know, is that it's majestic. It's beautiful. It gave my curls a new lease on life.

Okay, maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, but Frizz Free Styling Smoother gets major love from me. For the curlies with baby smoove curls (not me), you can probably get away using this alone as your curl definer. However - I appreciate Jane Carter for not trying to play folks with more textured curls, and passing this off as a styler. It's clearly labeled as a leave-in, frizz controller, and curl prepper. The directions even say to apply it to wet curly/coily hair as a base hydrator and frizz reducer, before applying styling product. Team Jane, thank you for your honesty.

The Bad
Zip. Zilch. Nada. Okay. One tiny thing. Soybean oil. Not a huge fan - I share why a little later on.

The Bottom Line
I've come to the conclusion that Frizz Free Styling Smoother is a curl primer that assists in reducing frizz and imparting major shine to the hair (see photo below). Beyond that, it doesn't take a whole gob of product to work its magic (what you saw in the video is how much I applied to my whole head), and it doesn't interfere with one of the most notoriously difficult gels to work with - Eco Styler. Yep. A winner in my book.

Would I Buy It Again?
Don't play yourself. Of course I am. And look for this baby in the Christina's Choice 2016 roundup, too.

Complex 4 Replenish & Repair Oil
Cost
$11 for 6oz

Where to Buy
Target, janecartersolution.com

Active Ingredients
  • Soybean Oil: Carrier oil used to lubricate and nourish the hair, providing softness and shine.
  • Sunflower Seed Oil: Pressed oil of the sunflower seed, rich in omegas 6 and 9 which help stimulate growth, improve elasticity, and ciments the cuticle layers to help improve moisture retention and correct porosity issues.
  • Coconut Oil: Oil high in saturated fats (which is why when cold, it is solid). One of the few known oils to penetrate the hair shaft and truly moisturize hair. Coconut oil helps to moisturize, seal, and prevent breakage.
  • Phospholipids: Naturally occuring complex lipids which contain fatty acids. Used to condition and soften the hair.
  • Glycolipids: Lipids with carbohydrates attached. Used to soften, condition, and provide anti-aging benefits to the hair.
Protein Free?

Curly Girl Friendly?
Maybe? IDK... What does the CG manual say about straight up oils? I've heard of a devout CG stylist that yells at his clients for using shea butter, so...

The Good
The Complex 4 Oil is lightweight, smells amazing, and imparts impeccable shine. I used it both as a pre-poo and sealant, and it served me quite well both ways. My hair didn't feel greasy or weighed down in the slightest.

The Bad
Full transparency here - my gripe with Complex 4 is the same challenge I had with Miche's POLISHED - soybean oil. Absolutely, soybean oil has value in hair products. There's a reason it is continuously used in oil blends. But, it's just not my cup of tea. A dealbreaker, no. But just a personal idiosyncracy.

The Bottom Line
An all around versatile oil. Perfect for pre-poos, sealing, hot oil treatments, henna mixes, and more. Lighweight and powerful, without the greasies.

Would I Buy It Again?
To be honest, no. It's a good oil, but not a stand-out or essential for me. However, if Jane Carter Solution released an exclusive, pure Maracuja Oil... I'd be 187.6% down for that. #justtakemymoneynow
